The idea that the quality and amount of our silence can improve the quality of our life (And our luck) in itself improves the quality of our life and luck. What could possibly be the connection? Calming us down, focusing us on what we are doing and what needs us to do it. Taking our mind off where it habitually goes, interfering with our usual pattern of life. Opening us to possibilities we wouldn’t normally consider. Giving us something new to think about. Offering us the opportunity to think about our thinking and reflect on how we think might be good for us and bad… Giving silence a try and exploring what “high quality silence” might be and how we might arrange it, and practice it, is already transforming our thinking.

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters, five granddaughters, one great granddaughter, and a great grandson on the way, within about ten minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.
