Dawn on Hunting Island — Beach Erosion, Beaufort Island, South Carolina

We are capable of hating each other. That should stop us in our tracks. Sit us down. Stupefy us. Dumbfound us. Bring us to our senses. But we don’t miss a beat. We go right on about our life as though nothing happened. Yet, we are capable of hating each other. Over nothing. The color of our skin. Our accent. Our place of origin. The stupidest things. Our favorite football team. Our capacity for hatred takes every step we take. Goes with us wherever we go. How do we reconcile ourselves with that? With our capacity for hatred? We don’t reconcile ourselves with it. We ignore it. Deny it. Pretend it is not so. It is so. And coming to terms with this truth about ourselves is essential to our awakening, our awareness, our realization, our knowing who we are and what we are capable of, that we might grow up, slow down, pay attention and allow kindness and compassion to take the lead in determining how we respond to life as it unfolds around us day by day.

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters, five granddaughters, one great granddaughter, and a great grandson on the way, within about ten minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.
