We have vulnerabilities that are actual,
and vulnerabilities that are imaginary.
At 2:00 AM,
imaginary is actual.

At 2:00 AM,
we can worry about the damnedest things.

For some people,
2:00 AM lasts all day long,
every day.
They are awash in agony
over earthquakes that never happen,
droughts and floods,
and a critical shortage
of underarm deodorant forever.

They are victims of their own
self-destructive tendencies
and their terminal insecurity.
And, they cannot be helped.
They can generate fear
and things to be afraid of
faster than can be abated
by logic and reason,
magic, prayer and chanting.

Jesus couldn't help those people.
They are beyond being healed and whole,
confident and well.

A lot of us are beyond help
on a lot of levels.
We all have to make out
as best we can,
and walk with a limp,
or worse,
the rest of the way.

It is called,
"Coming to terms with who we are,
how we are,
where we are,
when we are,
here/now."

Limping,
or worse,
through every day.

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters and five granddaughters within about twenty minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.
