Fall Reflections–Somewhere in Maine

Knowing when to draw the line and knowing where to draw it are the two most important qualities in human beings. Every other characteristic pales in comparison. And how do we know? This question ranks right up there with, “How do we learn how and when to swallow?” Practically every living thing knows how and when to swallow! HOW do they know? That question is right up there with, “How do they know when and where to draw the line?” They all know. None of them know how they know. And that is true of all of the important things. We know but we don’t know how we know. I recommend paying attention to the things we know without knowing how we know. I think we will all be amazed at how much we know that we have never been taught. I know that I am amazed by something else every day.

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters, five granddaughters, one great granddaughter, and a great grandson on the way, within about ten minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.
