Edisto Sunrise — Edisto Island State Park, South Carolina

James Joyce said the “Secret Cause” of our death is the driving force of our life. The thing that is most true about us and most valuable to us will be what kills us. Maybe it is our impatience. Our being in a hurry. Our failure/refusal to take our time with anything. I like to sit, looking out the window. I wonder if that will kill me. I hope so. I hope I die there, because there is always more to see, more connections to make, more to be aware of… And I can look out the window anywhere, doing anything, even if there is no actual window anywhere around. It has become a metaphor with me for considering important things great and small.

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters, five granddaughters, one great granddaughter, and a great grandson on the way, within about ten minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.
