We build a life around
our original nature
and the innate virtues
that are our from birth.
We live to serve these things,
sharing them appropriately
in each situation as it arises.

What we do to pay the bills
falls into place around this center,
and we live with balance and harmony,
with integrity and sincerity,
at one with our life,
and doing what needs to be done,
when, where and how it needs to be done,
all our life long.

This is the adventure of being alive.

Which we can reject/refuse
by having eyes for other things.

Smooth and easy, for example.
Or, the culture's idea of having it made.
Or, our idea of success and happiness...
The list is long
of things that separate us from our life
and lead us into a life
that has nothing to do
with our original nature
and innate virtues.

And thus, the need for consciousness/awareness
and diligence in the service
of The Way that is uniquely ours to travel,
making a regular place in our life
for emptiness, stillness and silence,
reflection, realization, illumination, enlightenment--
as our life becomes our practice
and we become its devoted attendees,
moment by moment,
day by day.

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters and five granddaughters within about twenty minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.
