We have to find the center and live from there--
the center of the boundary line
between the extremes.

Between the contraries.

Between the contradictions.

We have to live on the boundary
between the mutually exclusive polarities
that populate our life,
and not just anywhere on the boundary,
but in the dead center of the line
all of the time.

Dionysus and Apollo live within us,
and we have to live in the center
of the line separating them.

And so with every other pair of opposites.

This is the work of Balance and Harmony.
Of consciousness/awareness.
Of seeing/hearing/knowing/realizing.

It is the work of illumination,
of enlightenment.

It is the work of being alive!

The trick with managing the art
of the center point
is understanding that it is
not a fixed point,
but a wobble.

It is in constant movement.
Woops! Too much!
Woops! Too much the other way!
Woops! Too much! Back the other way!
And so it goes.

There are no steady states of being.
We are moving back and forth
across a floating line
seeking an imaginary center
in strong winds
on heavy seas,
going, "Woops! Woops! Woops! all the time.

And, when we get that down,
we have it made!

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters and five granddaughters within about twenty minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.
