The life we are living
needs to evoke,
enable,
serve
our original nature
and the innate virtues
that are ours from birth.

However, this may be other than
what we do to pay the bills
evokes,
enables,
serves.

In that case, we walk two paths
at the same time,
by keeping an eye on the other path
while our feet are on this one.

The first path in this instance
would be what we do to pay the bills,
and the second path
would be what we pay the bills to do.

This life needs to be allowed
to fall into place
around our original nature
and our innate virtues.

What have we always loved to do?
What have we always been good for?
People depend on us for what?
Looked to us for what?

I have loved three things
through adolescence and adulthood,
a canoe,
a camera,
and a typewriter/word processor--
and my life has fallen into place
around these things.

I have aged out of the canoe,
but I am still very much into
photography and writing,
and fully expect that to be the case
as long as possible.

So find your loves
and work them into your life.
Live to do what you love,
and your life will take on
a meaning and a vitality
it may not have had for a while.

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters and five granddaughters within about twenty minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.
