Smoky Woods 10/27/2006 Oil Paint Rendered — Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Townsend, Tennessee
There is no Why?
There is no Because!"

There is no Master Plan.
There is no Plan of any kind.

There is no reason
for things being the way they are.

Things are the way they are
in response to something else
being the way it is/was.

BUT! Not BECAUSE something else
is/was the way it is/was!

The response did not have to be
what it was.
What is the reason things responded
the way they did?
There is no reason.

They could have responded in countless
other ways.

There is no Why?
There is no Because!

Which should put an eternal end
to all of those "If/Then" scenarios,
and to the eternal idea
that "all of our problems will be solved
if we just kill" somebody.

But, no.
And this supports my argument entirely.
There is no Why?
means there is no predicting the future.
We do what we do in response to the situation
thinking that such-and-such will happen,
and maybe it does,
But.
Other things also happen that were
completely unanticipated,
disrupting the flow of events
and creating a flurry of situations
that constitute what is generally
referred to as "a mess."

And this plays into Taoism full tilt,
in that Taoism is about balance and harmony
as a permanent response
to the Yin/Yang at work in every circumstance.

Alignment with the Tao is seeing what is happening
in a situation
and what is called for in response,
taking everything into account,
and responding in ways that serve what needs to happen
while being careful to balance the things that
are keeping what needs to happen from happening,
so that the forces favoring "For"
and the forces favoring "Against"
are honored and respected in recognition
of the importance of equilibrium and stability
within the situation.

That kind of approach is the end to war--
and to extreme positions of all kinds,
reducing ciaos to manageable wobbles,
and making life better for all concerned.

Where the mountains are made low
and the valleys are lifted up,
and Yin/Yang are maintained
within an acceptable range
of balance and harmony
throughout society.

This cannot work without all people
within the society understanding/accepting
that no one can have what they want
at the expense of anyone else,
and everyone shares mutual responsibility
for the good of the whole.

Which cannot be imposed from the top down
or from the outside in,
but has to be organic,
from inside out
in response to the circumstances
requiring something to be done.
That response is mediated by a cultural attitude
honoring the Tao,
the flow of balance and harmony,
throughout the culture
above all else.

Which is to say, an environment
in which the Tao is natural
and not forced.

Where would you go to find one of those?
It has to start where you are,
with you being what is needed
in each situation as it arises,
and seeing what happens in response
over time.

Sourwood 02 11/04/2020 Oil Paint Renderee — 22-Acre Woods, Indian Land, South Carolina
We need more time!
If we only had more time!
Everything would become clear
with time!

That is the fundamental illusion.

Jesus perpetuated the folly
with his,
"Wisdom is known by her children" line,
and even if we extend the theory
to the level of the grandchildren,
or the great-grandchildren,
wisdom still lies unrecognized
by those who perpetuate racism, say,
or sexism,
or ignorance and stupidity, etc.,
forever through all of the ages and epochs
of time.

We do not grow up ever as a collective!
Only individuals attain the level of seeing
that makes a difference in their life,
and they cannot pass it along
even to their disciples.

Jesus' disciples wrecked what he handed to them
in their own lifetime.
The same can be said for the Buddha.
The old Taoists lasted the longest,
but even their understanding
of how things are
and how to respond appropriately
disappeared over time,
and things returned to how they really are
all of the time--
which is how they are now,
if we only look around.

We see as individuals,
not as communities
or congregations,
and what is known as Revealed Truth
cannot be passed along
even to one's own children.

Those who know in any generation
can only seek out each other,
and enable the growth of one another
in small groups of two or three,
but rarely larger,
grasping and serving what they can
of the light
while they last,
encouraging one another as they are able
for the work
of seeing/hearing/knowing/doing/being
"transparent to transcendence,"
through the way they live,
and allowing that to be that
when they die.

Sunset at Clingman’s Dome (Parking Lot) 05/16/2005 Oil Paint Rendered — Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cherokee, North Carolina
Until the church renounces its theology
and embraces its role as children/servants
of the light,
rejecting sin and embracing seeing,
it will remain a relic of wistful thinking,
delusion,
deception
and denial.

As things stand,
the church is only a slight shift in perspective
away from turning the light around,
understanding metaphor, not fact,
to be the ground of its resurrection
from the death of its own devising.

"The spirit is like the wind
that blows where it will,"
and we cannot keep up with the spirit
using spiritual laws,
doctrines,
dogma,
catechisms,
liturgical rigidity and ritual,
systematic theology,
orthodoxy
and literal interpretations
of the Bible.

The qualities required to walk with the spirit
are integrity,
sincerity,
spontaneity,
balance and harmony.

An affinity for
emptiness,
stillness
and silence.

An intense curiosity,
innocence,
and openness
to the fullness of experience.

And, the more we can be
empty of opinion,
expectation,
judgment,
wanting,
fear,
willfulness,
stubbornness,
resentment,
jealousy,
and the need to have our way NOW!--
the better things will go
in developing our relationship
with the spirit that is like the wind.

And we will be able to be open to,
listening/hearing,
looking/seeing,
feeling/trusting
what is happening in each situation as it arises,
and responding as needed
to what is called for
with the gifts of our original nature
and our innate virtues/specialties/things we do well
that came with us from the womb,
offering what we have to give
to what needs that which needs what we have to offer,
for the good of the whole,
and the joy of doing it,
and the satisfaction of having done it,
through all of the circumstances of our life,
all our life long.

May be be so!

And, when it is so,
the church will be the church!

String Lake Reflection Oil Paint Rendered — Grand Teton National Park, Jackson, Wyoming
What's money for?
Buying what's needed
to do what needs to be done.
Buying the tools required for the work.

What's the work?
Being servants of the light.
Asking the questions that beg to be asked.
Saying the things that cry out to be said.
Being who the situation calls us to be.
Doing what the situation calls for.
Rising to the occasion
by doing the right thing,
in the right place,
at the right time,
in the right way.
Being like the spirit
that is like the wind
blowing where it will
in the service of the light.

All of this is metaphor.
Metaphor is all there is.
Because we cannot say what is.
It is too much to be said.
There are no words.

Sit down.
Shut up.
Welcome
the emptiness,
the stillness,
the silence,
and wait
for the energy of life and being
to stir to life in the silence
and bring to mind something urgent,
compelling,
attractive,
inescapable,
irrestible
drawing you into the field of action,
into the flow of the energy of life,
that resonates with your heart and soul,
and calls you forth
in the service of the light
to do what must be done here/now,
who knows why,
it doesn't matter why,
or how we know,
without being able to,
or needing to,
explain,
defend,
justify,
excuse
our action,
trusting wisdom to be known/validated
by its children,
or its grandchildren,
or to be the necessary mistake
that wakes us up,
and turns the light around,
sending us off in a different direction
in the service of the light,
like the wind that blows where it will,
not knowing where it will be blowing next.

There is no plan,
no agenda,
no map,
no rules to carefully keep,
no footprints or recipes to follow...

There is only the silence
and what arises within it
to draw us into action
like a lover following the beloved,
not knowing where/when/why/how,
only this or that here/now,
trusting ourselves to know what to do
when the time for doing
is upon us,
allowing ourselves to be led as needed
to do what is needed
in each situation as it arises
through the circumstances as they evolve
our entire life long.

And letting that be that.

And yet, and yet...

There is balance and harmony at the core,
at the center,
and stability/certainty/confidence/reliability
at the heart of aimlessness and unknowing.

It is a knowing unknowing,
a deliberate aimlessness,
a peaceful, joyful, participation
in the experience and expression of transcendence,
as we become ourselves a metaphor
for more than words can say.

Sun Beams at Water Rock Knob Oil Paint Rendered –Blue Ridge Parkway, Maggie Valley, North Carolina
Photography is being where the photos live
and waiting for them to appear.

I stalk photographs
like a leopard stalks a warthog.

I troll for photographs
the way shrimpers troll for shrimp.

I get up early
to be in place before sunrise,
and stay out late
to catch afterglow following sunset.

I wait, and wait, and wait,
for the wind to stop,
for the tourists to leave,
for the tide to come in
or withdraw.

Or did, before age caught up with me
and announced curfew.

My knees no longer allow
the airplane position,
which is also the driving/riding position,
and my yin for another moon rise
is supplanted by the desire
for an early dinner
and a book by the fireplace.

The idea of sunrise is met with
side-eyes and,
"Really? Another sunrise?"

I am soon to have a hammock hanging
in the back yard,
where inflammation in my joints
will appreciate my feet
being above my heart,
with a camera resting in my lap
in case a bird comes to the feeder
or a rabbit hops into view,
or a deer strolls by,
or a wild turkey pays a call,
and I let the picture come to me.

Sunrise at Mesa Arch 02 05/11/2010 Oil Paint Rendered — Canyonlands National Park, Moab, Utah
The Great Migration
is going to change the way
we do business
in this country,
and the way we live,
and the way we think.

The Third world is closer
that we realize.

When the coastal cities
have to relocate
because of too much water,
and the population of the western states
has to move
because of too little water,
it is going to transform
the world as we know it,
and there is no way to prepare for that.

We can't prepare for anything.
We have been knowing about the climate collapse
for four generations or more
with nothing being done.

"The Russians will never attack Ukraine!"
goes hand and glove with,
"Global warming is a myth!"
as a way of exposing our refusal
to deal with the unwanted
because it would "ask too much of us."

Well.

It's about to be demanded.
There won't be enough toilet paper
to go around.
Or enough toilets.
Just for starters.

The basics of life
are no longer assured,
and certainly cannot be
assumed and taken for granted.

And we watch as things crumble
around us
and wonder today
what we can count on tomorrow.

With "How to survive?"
being countered with,
"Who wants to?"

We will live in the presence
of what each day permits,
as the Third World has done
from the start,
and as the homeless population
already does every day,
with leaving grandma/pa on the ice flow
becoming more real
as civilization crumbles in on itself
because of self-deception and denial,
and prosperity being the ruin of the world.

In that scheme, where do we turn
when we have nowhere to turn?

Emptiness, stillness and silence
remain the source of all things needed
to face the day,
every day.

Jesus had nowhere to lay his head.
The Taoist sages and Zen masters
all managed on Third World fare
all their lives.

Life is lived out of the inner source
of realization/awareness/savvy-hood,
with people having what they need within
to find what they need without,
but not without developing the practice
of listening/looking/hearing/seeing
that has guided the species through
long years to here/now.

We have to learn to know what we know,
and the time is upon us
to sit still and know what we know
and what to do about it,
in the service of it,
moment to moment,
day to day.

Wu Wei is action without effort,
doing without thinking,
without striving,
without trying.

"Do or do not!" said Yoda,
"There is no TRY!"

That is Wu Wei,
doing or doing not
as required by the moment,
by the here/now.

That is how we live in every moment.
Being wholly "of the moment"
as one "thus come"
right here,
right now,
as though we were "plopped"
into the moment with no warning,
without being briefed,
without rehearsing,
practicing,
or planning
without knowing what's what,
just seeing/hearing here/now
and responding without knowing
what we are doing,
yet doing exactly what needs to be done,
"out of nowhere."

Being so attuned to the moment
that our response to the moment
is like a shortstop fielding
a hard grounder
and turning a double play.

The right action at the right time
in the right place in the right way,
"of itself."

We do things like that all of the time.
The dishwasher goes on
while we are taking a shower
and we automatically adjust
the hot water accordingly,
without thinking,
just doing the right thing
at the right time in the right way.

Spontaneously,
in response to the moment.

We can do it,
and we can trust ourselves
to do it.

Time after time.

We are made that way.

But we have to be like the spirit
that is like the wind
blowing where it will.

No contrivance.
No scheming.
No agenda.

Just seeing/hearing/doing.

In each situation as it arises.

Adjusting the hot water automatically
throughout the day.

Blue Ridge Fall 10/15/2006 — Near Ashville, North Carolina
The three experiencess
traditionally,
historically,
classically,
universally
recognized
as being "transparent to transcendence"
are
art,
music
and nature.

Transparency to transcendence
simply means that these experiences
are easily flipped,
like an optical illusion
might be flipped,
and serve as a doorway,
a threshold,
a portkey,
flipping us
from this world
of normal, apparent, physical reality
to the world of invisible,
though always present,
always "right here,"
"right nowi,"
spiritual reality,
and exposing us to the wow,
of amazement,
wonder,
radiance,
bliss
of "the farther shore"
being here/now,
and then, of course,
it's gone again "like that,"
when we begin thinking about
our experience
rather than simply experiencing
our experience
with a smile
and letting it be.

The vehicle of transportation
can be anything,
but it is not everything.

The odor of cookies baking in the oven
can do it.
The happy gurgling of a baby can do it.
It is everywhere at all times.

It is all "transparent to transcendence"
for eyes that see,
ears that hear,
hearts that understand.

But.

We no sooner experience it than we,
(Get this now,
the utter stupidity/ignorance of it),
begin to wonder how to profit from it,
how to package it,
how to sell it,
how to make it make money for us.

Money pays the bills
but it is no foundation for life,
running over,
pouring out.

And we sell our souls
for thirty pieces of silver
again and again.

Just "be still and know"
transcendent reality
on the other side of everything
for eyes that see,
ears that hear,
hearts that understand.

And find all that you need in that
to step into each day
and do there what needs to be done there
as companions of the Holy
within us all
and spread throughout the world,
reminding us of who we are
and where we belong,
being "transparent to transcendence"
ourselves.

Sunwapta River Oil Paint Rendered — Jasper National Park, Canadian Rockies, Alberta
On a large enough scale,
nothing we do matters,
and on a small enough scale,
everything we do matters.

I recommend living small.
Live on the level
where our next breath
counts for something!

Live on the level
where what we think
determines,
or, at least, strongly influences,
what we do,
and where what we do
determines,
or strongly influences,
what happens next,
and where what happens next
determines,
or strongly influences,
our our present circumstances
impact the development
of the conditions and circumstances
that flow naturally,
spontaneously,
from the present conditions and circumstances,
and "For the want of a nail,
a horse was lost,
and for the want of a horse,
a rider was lost,
and for the want of a rider
the battle was lost,
and for the want of the battle,
the war was lost,
all for the want of a nail."
(13th century proverb)

It matters how we live,
what we think,
what we do,
who and how we are.

It matters that we live
as though we are a nail--
and to realize that
we are much more than that
in terms of our significance
to every situation as it arises.

Our place is to live as though it matters
in each situation as it arises.

If we are going to take anything on faith,
let it be this!

The Tree on the Hill Oil Paint Rendered — Blue Ridge Parkway, Blowing Rock, North Carolina
Wanting,
desiring,
having to have.

Fearing,
dreading,
anxiety ridden.

Keep us off balance,
out of harmony
over the full course
of our life.

Upon what do balance and harmony depend?
What keeps us so far from
that state of being?

Wanting,
desiring,
having to have.

Fearing,
dreading,
anxiety ridden.

Where is the confidence?
The certainty
and conviction
that things are fine as they are?

That nothing can unsettle us
because we can deal successfully
with all that comes our way?

Where is the adamantine source of assurance
and self-reliance
that doesn't need anything
it does not have
to manage the circumstances,
the catastrophes
the disasters
we imagine on the way?

Look where we have been as a species!
Where we have come from!
With nothing but our own resolve
and creativity to count on
at every turn!

We are special stock!
We have the resiliency
and the will
to see what's what
whatever it may be
and do what needs to be done
about it
in each situation as it arises
day by day!

Let that be our balance pole
on the high wire
of the day to day!

Over the chasms and ravines
of the unheard of,
the unknown!

We have met the beasts of the nights
and the terrors of the days
and here we are!
Still going!
That's what we do!

Take heart!
Fare well!
Be well!
We have what we need!
To do what is needed!
To meet the day!
Day after day!

The Fence 02 07/12/2014 Oil Paint Rendered — 6-Mile Creek Road, Lancaster County, South Carolina
We live our way into the presence
of That Which Has Always Been Called God.

And no one can tell us exactly how to do that.
Those who know can tell us generally how to do it.
Joseph Campbell said,
"Follow your bliss."
That is as much as can be said.
Beyond that,
"The Tao that can be said/told/explained
is not the eternal Tao," (Lao Tzu).
"A path that can be discerned/designated
as The Path
is not a reliable path," (Martin Palmer).
"The path that is The Path/The Way
can only be recognized in hindsight," (Jim Dollar).

In other words,
we are on our own.
And,
"We get by with a little help
from our friends."

It helps to come together
with those who know what
we are talking about
and talk of how it is going,
of what we know and don't know,
of what works for us
and doesn't work for us,
etc.

A community of those seeking the way
can be helpful,
until someone thinks they know the way
and begins to tell others what they
should be doing,
and should not be doing.

Those who know
know that they don't know.
And don't say more than,
"Try it and see what happens."

We are all different,
and we all have to live our way
to the truth of who we are
and what is ours to do,
and no one can help us with that
beyond saying,
"I don't know your business!
Only you know your business!
Now empty yourself
and be still and quiet
until you know what you know!"

And I have a friend who likes
to say,
"Jim, I can't be empty/still/quiet
unless I'm playing the drums!"

We have to find our own way
even to emptiness, stillness and silence.

The path to transcendence
is called the Tao.

It is that simple
and that complex.

Transcendence is the heart of the matter.
"The Tao that can be said
is not the eternal Tao"
(Lao Tzu).

"The path that can be discerned as a path
is not a reliable path"
(Martin Palmer).

Which means that the path to transcendence/Tao
can only be discerned in hindsight
(Jim Dollar).

We cannot know beforehand
what we are doing,
we can only reflect
on what we have done,
come to new realizations,
make adjustments and accommodations,
and press on
with our Sisyphean task
of making sense out of
the entire experience of life,
in a "When I do this,
that happens," kind of way.

We do best, I think,
when we consciously take up
the path to transcendence/Tao
and live with our eyes open
in each situation as it arises.

This living with our eyes open
is what the Buddha was talking about
with "Enlightenment."

Clarity,
realization,
awakening,
waking up,
turning the light around,
seeing/hearing/knowing/understanding,
etc.,
are all metaphors for the same experience.

And what we know when we know
what all who have known have known
is that we are walking the path
of transcendence/Tao.

It is an age-old path.
It has been around from the very first.
The Shamans of lore lead the way,
and their way was replaced by,
of course, the organized religion
of the day--
which was, of course, produced
by the organized priesthood
of the day--
the same exact sequence of events
that were enacted between the death of Jesus
and the arising of the Holy Catholic Church,
with orthodoxy killing/burning at the stake/
torturing/hunting down/stamping out
the Gnostics with their gnosis
which translates simply as
"the knowledge of spiritual mysteries" (Google),
not by way of theology,
but by way of the direct experience
of transcendence/Tao/The Holy/etc. in our life.

Orthodoxy cannot bear the competition
of Gnostics/gnosis/gnosticism
because orthodoxy would have no basis
for existence
if everybody had the same access
to direct transcendental experience,
and then what would the priests
do for a living?

The Gnostics/gnosis/gnosticism
were driven underground,
where truth always goes
when the times are not safe for truth,
and here we are.

The times are calling for a resurrection
of gnosis/gnosticism
because of the failure of organized religion
(Orthodoxy) to provide anything substantive
to ground and direct us
in our confrontation with the madness and insanity
of the day-to-day.

The path of transcendence/Tao
has been dealing in balance and harmony
from the first Shaman to right here, right now.
That's where life is to be found,
"New life, abundant life," as has been said,
"spilling over, pouring out, as living water
for all who are dying of thirst
for the grounding substance
for facing what is to be faced
and doing what needs to be done
in each situation as it arises
all our life long.
