Finding our way to The Way one situation at a time. I don't know how great it will be, but I expect it will be interesting, and I look forward to it going on past all reason because wonder is just that way. Are you coming or not?

Everybody has their own story/stories,
their own way of looking at things,
thinking about things...
It's a wonder.
I cherish a restaurant filled with people
living their own life,
more or less.
And a movie theater,
a football stadium,
a continent,
a planet...
I want to listen to each of them
as they say what's what,
what matters,
what happened to them,
and what they did in response,
and how that impacted their life,
and what their hopes are,
and their wishes were,
what broke their hearts,
what made them smile...
I want to know them all,
and encourage them along their way.
I love the oral histories
that are recorded of the elders
in each generation,
talking about their lives.
John Neihardt's book,
"Black Elk Speaks"
is a record of conversations
with a Oglala Lakota Sioux shaman,
or, medicine man,
that I can only read in short segments,
reflecting, as it does, the pathos
of Native Americans at their trail's end.
Carl Jung said, "All of our problems
are the result of being unable
to tell our stories."
Articulation is clarification,
is confrontation--
all three of which are required
for reconciliation.
Until we are reconciled to ourselves
and our own life experience,
we live out the pathos of our own trail,
without being aware of what is going on.
And that is the saddest end of all.

We are always awaiting the next thing,
wondering how we will respond,
waiting to see,
trusting ourselves to pull
another rabbit out of the hat
and surprise ourselves again
with the range of our repertoire
and the depth of our capabilities.
We are amazing.
First grade--remember that?
Talk about a shock to our system!
Yanking us out of one way of life,
and hurling us into another,
requiring us to sit still,
be quiet
and do what the teacher said do.
How did we ever get through
the first month of first grade?
And it has been a steady shock
of old being replaced by new
from then until now--
and beyond now...
We have what it takes
to meet the day
no matter what the day holds/requires.
All it ever requires
is emptying ourselves
of our fear/desire/expectations/judgements/opinions
and waiting to see how we respond
to what is being asked of us/called for
in each situation as it arises,
as we do what needs to be done,
anyway,
nevertheless,
even so.
Wants and wishes notwithstanding.

Squaring ourselves up with our life
is also known as "Growing Up."
It is a life-long process
because life changes over time,
and our traditional routines
are erased,
requiring us to
"reprogram the brain for auto-pilot"
(Joyce Powers),
and it is hell some more again.
Putting ourselves in accord with our life,
aligning ourselves with our life,
reconciling ourselves with our life,
is a conscious/willful/deliberate act
of seeing/hearing/knowing/doing/letting be.
Our life is never what we wish it were for long.
We learn to hit curve balls,
and sliders make their appearance,
or knuckle balls,
or spitters...
and we have to take things into account
we never-before considered.
Giving ourselves time to make the adjustments
necessary to accommodate ourselves
to "a new world Golda,"
and maintaining our sense of humor
throughout the process,
allows "nature to take its course"
and we settle into new
just in time to run aground upon newer,
and here we go again, again.

Living to be who we are
(When we are,
what we are,
where we are)
is much easier than
living to be happy,
wealthy,
successful,
admired,
popular,
etc.
Living to be "one thus come,"
just as we are
in each situation as it arises,
as a sequoia might do it,
or a mountain lion,
or a humpback whale.
Meeting the situation
as it needs to be met
without aims and purposes,
agendas and plans,
with no contriving,
manipulating,
exploiting,
controlling...
just being who the situation
needs us to be
in ways appropriate to the occasion,
as only we can do it
is all it ever takes.
Is all that is ever required of us.
Is all that can legitimately
be asked of anyone.
And we all have the capacity to be
what is needed,
to do what is called for
within the scope of our original/essential nature
and our innate virtues/character.
Get out of all your other roles,
and into this one,
and back into all the other ones
as this one would do those.
Transforming your life,
your relationship with yourself,
and with the world.
Just by being you.

The gods have to meet their own standards,
or be nothing more than thugs and bullies
staking out their claims
on the streets of civilization
throughout the ages.
"Shall not the Judge of the Universe do right?"
chided Moses early on,
calling for justice from the origin of justice.
It is a call that stands the test of time.
So, when we hear, "Do unto others as you
would have them do unto you,"
it is a measure we, in turn can apply
to the wise bridesmaids,
who declared, "Go get your own oil!",
and to the arrogant landowner,
who asserted that he could do whatever
he wanted with what belonged to him.
Not so fast, brothers and sisters.
Justice cuts through all presumed exceptions
and exclusions!
Be yourselves what you expect from others!
And don't think you can pull the old
"God has no limits!" line on us.
God is limited by God!
Just as each of us have to answer
to ourselves,
so God has to answer to God,
in doing what is right in all circumstances
to all parties
without exception or exclusion over time.

Remaining with the freedom theme,
we are all free to be who we are,
and we are also bound to be who we are.
We are not free to not be who we are.
To not be who we are
is the ultimate form of sin--
the greatest betrayal of self
that we are capable of making.
It would be "the unforgivable sin"
of the Biblical record,
for what can make restitution for our failure
to be who we are,
to bring forth what we have to offer?
We can only begin here/now
to be true to ourselves,
softening the impact of all
our missed opportunities in the past,
and redeeming what can be redeemed
in our future.
The way is the way of integrity and sincerity,
living with fealty,
liege loyalty
and filial devotion
to our original/essential nature
and our innate virtues/character
that are ours from birth.
Bringing those forth
in response to each situation as it arises,
within the context and circumstances
of life as it is,
here/now,
moment to moment
is the task of being human.
The on-going,
never ending
task of being human.
A task we are not free to reject
and deny,
in any situation,
ever.
What is called for in every here/now
is to be true to ourselves
in responding to what's what
and doing what needs to be done about it,
no matter what,
moment-to-moment,
forever.
We are not free to choose our choices.
And our choices are limited by time and place,
age and circumstance.
Our freedom is restricted by 10,000 things.
What we want is negated by what we want,
and we have to choose between
mutually exclusive desires.
To be free is to be in denial
about something
that changes with the tides,
and is as constant as the sea.
Letting that be
is to be free of the burden
of having to be free.
And that is as free as it gets.

Something happens
and we respond to it
in each situation as it arises.
No matter what happens,
everything hinges upon
the quality of our response.
The best responses
are grounded in
integrity,
sincerity
and spontaneity--
in sync with our original/essential nature
and our innate virtue/character,
both of which are ours from conception
(And from the conception of our parents,
and of their parents...
all the way back to Lucy in Africa,
the mother of us all).
Our responses come out of who we are,
and who we are capable of being.
The more conscious we are
of all of this,
the more likely our responses
will be ideally suited to our circumstances
in the situation which brings them forth.
Waking up to the truth of our nature
and our character
provides us with a platform,
an anchor-rock,
from which to meet life as it comes to us,
every day.

"By the book" is no way
to run a world,
or a life.
"Throw away the book"
and allow your deep sense/feel
for what needs to be done here/now
guide you on your path.
And when it turns out that you were wrong,
allow your deep sense/feel
for what needs to be done here/now
guide you on your path.
Intuition and instinct are not foolproof.
Both tell us that the world is flat
and the sun goes around the earth.
That does not negate the value
of intuition and instinct.
When we do not know what we are doing,
or what to do,
we keep making our best guess
until things click into place,
always trusting our felt-sense
of what is called for,
of what needs to happen.
Feeling what needs to happen
is not the same as thinking
what needs to happen.
"When in doubt, go by the book,"
is not as reliable as
"When in doubt, trust your feelings."
And keep trusting your feelings
in light of what happens when you do,
and making adjustments as necessary
all along the way.

Jesus was a rogue prophet
in a straight-laced world.
All prophets are.
They are not fit for the culture
they are born into,
and rather than adjust themselves
to the culture,
their task is to adjust the culture
to the truth of what's what.
We are always missing the point,
or missing something about the point,
and have to be corrected by those
who see what we are missing.
Happens to me all the time.
I say, "Thank you for pointing that out to me,"
and make the adjustments necessary
to see to it that I don't miss that again.
We all have to correct the culture
we are born into,
the culture that we live in.
The entire culture is off track,
and only individuals can live it
back on track,
by living themselves on track,
one situation as a time.
And by taking correction
when they need to be corrected,
with appreciation and gratitude
to those who point out what we are missing.

We are alone against
the conditions and circumstances
of our life,
and we have everything we need.
It comes tucked inside our DNA
alongside our heart and soul.
Every living thing
comes out of the egg or womb
ready to meet what is waiting for it.
Human beings are no exception.
We only have to learn to use
the equipment we have on hand
to know that it is so.
We are always selling ourselves short,
or down the river,
thinking we don't have anything
worth having,
when we only have to open ourselves
to what is there
to know that we are well-prepared
for life as it is to be lived.
We aren't better trained in using
the tools at our disposal
because our species traded its birthright
for the wonders of civilization
and its amazing distractions, diversions
and entertaining pastimes.
We are back to the Garden of Eden here,
with Adam and Eve opting for
what is delicious to the tongue
and a delight to the eyes
over what is good for life in the world
just as it is.
We are forever making trade-offs,
giving up this in order to have that,
without knowing the full repercussions
of what we are doing.
We do not get far
without knowing what's what
and what is called for
and what to do about it.
To find what we need,
we have to change the ratios between
thinking and using reason/logic/analytics,
and feeling using
listening/looking/seeing/hearing/knowing
on levels we cannot explain.
When we stop valuing instinct and intuition
in favor of rules and recipes,
we wander off the path,
lose the way,
and enter the wasteland of eternal discontent.
The way back to Eden is "right there,"
for those willing to "turn the light around,"
and begin looking within
for what everyone thinks is without,
peace, satisfaction, contentment and well-being.
Fading Dream Oil Paint Rendered 10/21/2022 — The flag is weeping because people who stand for the flag do not stand for what the flag stands for, and democracy is dying by their hand.
Living for the good times,
looking for the action--
any action will do--
is running from all that matters,
denying all that is threatening/disappointing/unwanted...
hiding from the truth that cannot be borne...
And it is the way of life
for a majority of the world's population.
And that isn't going to change.
Our work is to let that be
and tend this moment the way
this moment needs tending.
Don't keep score.
Don't figure the odds.
Don't care what your chances are,
just do the work of minding the moment
and doing what is called for
in each situation as it arises,
no matter what,
following the adage,
"Do what is good
whether it does any good or not!"
Be true to your original nature
and to the innate virtues/character
that are yours from birth,
and exhibit "the face that was yours
before you were born."
That is all that is asked of us,
and is well within the reach of all of us.
So, why hold anything back.
Why not live as though this life
is the only life we will ever live?
Why waste a day, an hour, the next minute?
"Get in there and do your thing,
and don't worry about the outcome!"
(Joseph Campbell's summation
of the Bahgavad Gita).
