Fading Dream Oil Paint Rendered 10/21/2022 — The flag is weeping because people who stand for the flag do not stand for what the flag stands for, and democracy is dying by their hand.
Living for the good times,
looking for the action--
any action will do--
is running from all that matters,
denying all that is threatening/disappointing/unwanted...
hiding from the truth that cannot be borne...
And it is the way of life
for a majority of the world's population.

And that isn't going to change.
Our work is to let that be
and tend this moment the way
this moment needs tending.

Don't keep score.
Don't figure the odds.
Don't care what your chances are,
just do the work of minding the moment
and doing what is called for
in each situation as it arises,
no matter what,
following the adage,
"Do what is good
whether it does any good or not!"

Be true to your original nature
and to the innate virtues/character
that are yours from birth,
and exhibit "the face that was yours
before you were born."

That is all that is asked of us,
and is well within the reach of all of us.
So, why hold anything back.
Why not live as though this life
is the only life we will ever live?
Why waste a day, an hour, the next minute?

"Get in there and do your thing,
and don't worry about the outcome!"
(Joseph Campbell's summation
of the Bahgavad Gita).

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters and five granddaughters within about twenty minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.
