Bass Lake 04/22/2019 02 Oil Paint Rendered — Blue Ridge Parkway, Blowing Rock, North Carolina
We come packed with emotions
and have to figure out
what to do with them
on our own.

We could use better coaching early on.

Coaching with balance and harmony in mind,
with very little emphasis on,
or interest in,
having our way.

Living with emotions swirling around
and flowing from
having our way
all the time
is no way to live.

Take the Fascists/Republicans
and Vladimir Putin
as modern examples
of where that can carry you,
and you can see where really good coaching
would be a great thing to have in place
early on.

Having our way NOW!
Is the worst foundation
for a life well-lived
in any species.

Humanity takes "worse"
to a level unimaginable
by the rest of the species
on the planet.

Too many of us cannot comprehend
living without having our way NOW,
or at all.

The Buddha and Jesus tried selling the idea,
to no avail,
and the gimme/gimme/gimme my way NOW crowd
has taken us to the brink of the Void
with no way of slowing the lemming's rush to the sea
in sight.

Now, all the coaches need better coaching,
and the self-help section
is crammed with books
about faster ways to get our way NOW,
and none about sacrificing our way ever
in the service of that which is
more important than we are throughout time.

That idea is completely absurd
and has no chance among those
who don't care what their chances are
(Which would be the fundamental
characteristic of better coaches).

The First Spiritual Law
is "Be what you need!"
We have to take up the way
of becoming better coaches
for any who will listen
to what we have to say.

What have you learned
to this point in your life?
What do you know to be
the adamantine foundation of your life?
Start there.

And, take up the practice
of breathing in and out
as you normally do,
but pausing for a count of five
in sync with your heart beat,
between exhaling and inhaling,
for five rounds
five times a day.

Breathing is basic,
and being aware of our breathing
grounds us in the here/now,
and being here/now
is the only place to be.

Fall at Lake Crandal 11/10/2018 Oil Paint Rendered — Anne Springs Close Greenway
Fort Mill, South Carolina
Being open to,
aware of,
engaged with
what is called for
in each situation as it arises,
positions us
to be free of opinions,
motives,
expectations,
desires,
will,
plans,
agendas
beyond the simple service
of what needs to happen here/now
in light of the circumstances
that form and shape the moment,
letting that carry us into the next moment,
and all the moments that follow.

It is also drama-free.

I cannot imagine why
it has not caught on by now.

Peach Orchard 03/01/2015 Oil Paint Rendered — Springs Farm, York County, South Carolina
Is it courage and confidence,
or arrogance and artifice,
that motivates us,
drives us,
calls us forth,
makes us known?

We can fool ourselves,
and operate from misplaced motives
and unworthy ends.

But at the center,
we are who we are.
Living from the center
brings everything else into basrelief,
a sculpture that reveals the essence
of the artist within.

It all flows into and out of
balance and harmony,
integrity, sincerity, spontaneity--
exhibiting who we are
when nobody is looking,
who we are our dreams are
forever unveiling.

There is no hiding
from the inner sculptor
revealing, disclosing,
declaring, exposing.

Are we living to be
or to conceal?
That is the question.
"To be or not to be?"

Doves on a Limb 09/11/2016 Oil Paint Rendered
We live out our lives,
maintaining our relationships,
and rising to meet the occasion
as best we can,
doing what needs to be done,
when, where and how it needs to be done,
enjoying what is to be enjoyed,
grieving what must be grieved,
"sunrise, sunset,"
day by day,
and letting that be that.

Few can improve on this for a life plan.
Get up and meet the day
with as much kindness,
grace
and generosity as we can muster.

Aligned with the flow
until circumstances call for
swimming against the flow,
and then do that.

We are designed to come up
with the right response
to what is happening here/now.
We can trust ourselves to that,
living out of the center,
true to our original nature
and our innate virtues
(the things we do best).

Nothing can happen
that emptiness, stillness and silence
can't find a way of dealing with.

It is the way of being human
through all times and places
for as long as life shall last.

And then we transition to the light,
back where it all started,
and start up again.

To the journey!
Always and forever!
May it be so!

Goldfinches 08/17/2016 Oil Paint Rendered
No one is here but us
and our idea of what's important
and how we serve that idea
in the time left for living.

The clearer we are about our idea
of what is important,
and the closer to right our idea is
the better it will be for everyone.

We owe it to ourselves
and to one another
to be clear about what we think
matters most,
and to be right about that.

Examination,
exploration,
reflection,
inquiry,
inspection,
scrutiny
regarding the validity and value
of what we declare to be important
to the point
of being worth our fealty,
allegiance,
devotion
and duty
is critical to our being clear and right
about what we say is so.

Where does our idea of The Good
come from?
What makes us think we are right about it?
Who says so besides us?
What evidence is there to support us?
What evidence is there to the contrary?
Who do we trust to know more than we do
in the matter?
What suggests to us that they are trustworthy?

How do we know that what we say is so is so?

And, if you say you "take it on faith,"
you are merely taking your opinion that it is so
on faith.
You are not doing the work of knowing it is so.
You are being lazy and faithless,
claiming to be faithful.
You are lying to yourself and all others.

Get off your duff
and do the work!
Dig around in what you say is so!
Expose it to the light!
Do not take someone else's word for it!
Find out for yourself
if it is as important as you say it is!
Hold nothing back!

Poke!
Probe!
Analyze!
Vet!

Nothing is more important
than being clear and right
about what is important!

Take up the quest,
and do not stop
until you know!

Goldfinches 08/26/2016 Oil Paint Rendered
How we do something, say something
is as important as what we do, say.

When and where are as important
as what and how.

Doing the right thing
in the right way
in the right place
at the right time
is the complete package.

And we do not do it by thinking about it.
We do not do it by rehearsing it.
By practicing it.
By arranging for it to happen.

The trick is that it "just happens."

It happens as a spontaneous response
to the moment as it arises,
unfolds,
before us.

Integrity,
sincerity,
spontaneity,
expressing themselves
with what needs to happen
when,
where
and how.

That is what it takes.

We have to live so aligned
with what needs to be done/said,
that it becomes automatic,
natural,
like breathing,
or sneezing.

When we live like that,
the entire world is a better place
instantly
all the time.

Outer Banks Sunset 09/27/2008 Oil Paint Rendered — Nags Head, North Carolina
We do too much that doesn't matter.
We are awash
in entertaining pastimes
and hyped-up triviality.

Frivolous escapes drive us to distraction,
which, of course, is the point.

Diversion, distraction, denial
are the three members of the godhead,
the Holy Trinity of life in these times,
and their favorite forms of engagement:
Drugs/Sex/Alcohol/Money--
pursuing them,
thinking about them,
engaging in them
enable us to pass the time
until something better comes along
promising plenty of thrills, noise and action.

Life comes down to getting away
from what we don't like
in the endless search
for something worthwhile.

Wasteland? Did someone say "Wasteland"?
The Land of Wasted Time,
Lost Meaning,
Forgotten Purpose.

The Wasteland lies between
the Garden of Eden
and the Garden of Gethsemane,
and is the eternal burden
of those who don't want either one.

Eden lacked pizzazz,
and Gethsemane is the end
of life as we want it to be.
Leaving us to wander through the Wasteland
waiting to die.

 Party? Did someone say "Party"?
"Laissez les bon temps rouler!"
On and on and on...No?

Peaches 06/29/2015 Oil Paint Rendered — Springs Farms, Fort Mill, South Carolina
We've been going at this long enough
that we should be better at it
by now.

I recommend that we start tomorrow at 6:00 AM
experiencing our experiences.
If my calculations are correct,
that will make a real difference
in the way we live our life.

More reflection on our experience
will result in a greater degree
of realization.
And that will change everything.

Experiencing our experience
means experiencing our reaction
to our experience
on emotional and physical levels.

I'm betting that our emotional response
calls forth our physical response,
and that as we insert our experiencing
our experience into the situation,
we will be curious about examining
the exact cause, degree and direction
of our emotional reactivity
and our physical response
by wondering where that comes from,
how we learned to react the way we react
and how we might react instead.

That will give us something else to think about,
and divert the quality and kind
of physical response,
which, in itself, will alter our response pattern,
and create new possibilities
for living our life.

By 12:01 PM,
we will have been experiencing our experience
for six hours and one minute,
and that should be enough of a difference
for the world to begin shifting on its axis,
and for gravity to start trying to figure out
what is going on.

Whenever gravity gets involved,
you better hold onto your chair,
because nobody knows where that will lead.
Could be quite the thing.

Fall at Crabtree Falls 10/17/2010 Oil Paint Rendered — Blue Ridge Parkway, Little Switzerland, North Carolina
Growing up is doing things
we do not want to do.

Things that go against the grain,
that go against the flow,
that disrupt the fluid ought-to-be-ness
that we love about our life.

Things like Gethsemane
and Golgotha.

And we sacrifice ourselves again,
and die yet again.

Again and again.

Death and resurrection, Kid.
Death and resurrection.

Writing is like that for me.
Writing can be such the grind.
I've said it all.
Nothing remains to be told.
It is all right there
for anyone to see
all the time.
Anyway.

And no one can hear anything
they don't already know.
I'm not telling them anything
they don't have to realize
for themselves--
that I haven't told them 10,000 times.

But.
Truth be known,
I am not writing for them,
but for me.

To remind myself again, today,
what's what,
and what needs to be done about it--
again, today.

And the old passes quickly away,
and behold, the new has come
once more today,
again.

Death and resurrection, Kid.
Death and resurrection.

The Bridge at Oregon Inlet at Sunset 01 Oil Paint Rendered — Cape Hatteras National Seashore
I think all governments,
and certainly the U.S.
(The fascists are ridiculously without restraint
and gleefully racist/sexist/obscene),
needs to do more to regulate,
oversee,
enforce
human rights throughout the land,
all lands.

Basic decency is not too much to ask/require.

But how we get there is beyond any plan of action
I can come up with.

The people who elect the fascists
are fascist themselves.

How do we make it uncool to be fascist
when it has become the coolest thing imaginable,
hooting and showboating
during the State of the Union address
becomes hooting and showboating
on main street
and in homerooms
in school districts nationwide.

Fascists egging on fascists,
upping the ante,
destroying the social bonds
that hold the country together
because they can.

I am ashamed of all of those
who feel no shame.

Who is going to stop the incivility?
Call it out?
Disappear it entirely?
And how are we going to instill respect
and honor for the common good?

We do it with each of us doing what we can,
when and where and how we are able,
Against all odds.
Not caring what our chances are.
And not stopping until things turn around,
and people treat people with compassion,
kindness
and generosity
from the heart
for the true good of all concerned.

Moonrise 01 10/23/2010 Oil Paint Rendered — Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Nags Head, North Carolina
Our perspective is a superpower
capable of transforming the world!

Perspective is influenced/impacted
by the 10,000 things,
including where we have been,
what has happened to us,
what has failed to happen to us,
and how we responded to it--
which is a function of perspective!

So, perspective forms/shapes/creates
perspective!

The key with perspective
is to be aware of it
and what influences/impacts it.

Who would be happy that we see things
as we do?
Who would be unhappy?
Who do we strive to please?
Displease?

Our degree of consciousness/awareness
governs our response to our circumstances
and the things our original nature
and innate virtues/traits
seek to express/exhbit
in and through the response we make.

We communicate who we are--
and how awake we are--
through everything we do,
and the way we do it.
