Black Australian Swan — Swan Lake Iris Gardens — Sumter, South Carolina

What language do swans (And all of nature) think with? Hunger, for instance, must make an impression, create an awareness, that spurs them to eat. Fear inspires escape behaviors. Mating means a host of things resulting in goslings… When they answer the call to migrate with the seasons, do they wonder what is going on? Do Australian Swans migrate in Australia? If so does that make them crazy in South Carolina? And is that another reason their wings are clipped to keep them from flying off and getting lost? So many questions. So much to know.

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters, five granddaughters, one great granddaughter, and a great grandson on the way, within about ten minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.

  1. I may be wrong here, but aren’t goslings baby geese and cygnets baby swans. Of course that could give those clipped wing swans something to think about. I read your musings everyday and try to comment only when I have something snarky to say. Peace to you and all this crazy world.

    1. I yield to the woman who knows what’s what! And appreciate the comment! Thanks for the reply. Having people keep me in check saves me the time and trouble of proofing my entire life and allows me to live and let things fall into place as needed over time. “Right within a certain range and degree” is right enough for me, and for all of those who know me for who I am, or yam.
