Goodale 2013 B
There is wanting/striving/getting/having,
and fearing/hiding/running/denying.

And there is seeing/knowing/listening/hearing,
and being who we need to be
to do what needs to be done--
and rising to meet the occasion,
time after time.

There is knowing what our business
needs to be
and taking care of our business
the way our business needs taking care of.

And there is the old golfer's adage,
"The more I practice
(Or, "The harder I work),
the luckier I get."

The people who do their work--
who take care of their business--
and tend their intuition
are the luckiest people in the world.

Everybody hears something like that
somewhere in their developmental years.
Those who grasp it and apply it
find what they need to do what needs to be done
and are blessed by what appears to be magic
all along the way.

The trick lies in doing what needs to be done.
When it needs to be done,
where it needs to be done,
how it needs to be done,
as long as it needs to be done,
all along the way.

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters, five granddaughters, one great granddaughter, and a great grandson on the way, within about ten minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.

  1. You are right about, “The trick lies in…” which I think emphasises one half of the equation. The other half is what makes this (‘doing when, where, how anything needs to be done’ ) really possible. That is BEING rooted in awareness, in the moment of doing anything, so we act from our whole, uncompromised, unbiased and not a selfish view of the situation. What needs to be done needs comprehension/recognition from our awareness, so that is the 1st requirement. Then, the ‘right, appropriate’ doing becomes effortless.

    1. And that means freedom from attachment to any outcome, or, the Buddha under the Bodhi Tree. With nothing to gain and nothing to lose we are free to be what needs to be here/now one here/now after another, which is all Jesus ever was/did.

    1. We are conditioned to want gratification for our senses, the root of all desires. It is encouraged, that we always aim to get a very easy, comfortable life for us (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual), so this becomes a strong habit, which we nurture lifelong. Thus, our tendency always is to be swayed with what we ‘want’ immediately, rather than to rise above this, and see the whole situation for what it is in its entirety.

The struggle (as I see it), is to not forget, that it is a conditioning to automatically act selfishly and get immediately what we ‘want’, rather than to act from a place of wholesome wisdom. The way is, again, to remain aware and not forget this, in the moment we act. So, we do not react automatically from our habit, but act consciously, in alignment with our understanding and wisdom.
To discern, in each moment the natural way from the selfish way, requires presence of awareness, which is wisdom itself, to act right.
