I understand the work
of our life as
being contented with how things are
here and now,
doing what needs to be done
in each situation as it arises
while maintaining/sustaining
our balance and harmony
day to day
as long as life shall last.

We have to settle ourselves
into an occupation
that enables us to make ends meet
(the income and out-go ends),
and live to serve/express
our original nature
and our innate virtuosities
amid our circumstances,
such as they are,
and let that be that.

You have to understand
that this is being said
by someone in his 80th year
who spends much of his time
sitting, reading, writing
and looking out the window
each day.

And don't think that it has anything
to do with you.

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters, five granddaughters, one great granddaughter, and a great grandson on the way, within about ten minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.

  1. Simply going by with what you are doing now in your 80th year…it is obvious that your life until now was lived as well as any that can be lived πŸ™‚
By “sitting, reading, writing and looking out the window each day”, you already are as close as any one can get- to balance, harmony and our original nature!
