Contriving to have our way
is the root of all of our problems today.
Any day.
Every day.

"I came not to be served,
but to serve,
and to give my life
to set others free."

Free to be what?
To do what?

To be who they need to be,
doing what needs to be done
in each situation as it arises
all their life long.

How free is that?

It is as free as we can be.
Free to serve the good of the whole.
Free to serve the good that is good.
In each situation as it arises,
throughout our life.

How good is the good we call good?
Whose good is served
by the good we call good?
We live for whose gain in mind?
Whose profit?
Whose advantage?

Who is better off for our having lived?
Who is worse off?
Who are we living for?
Who are we living to be?
What are we living to do?

What do we mean by the life we are living?
What are we saying by the life we are living?

Are we here to serve or to be served?
Whom/what do we live to serve?

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters and five granddaughters within about twenty minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.
