This is an excerpt from "The Nature of Spiritual Reality I,"
from my book, "A Handbook for the Spiritual Journey" on WordPress:

All knowing is tentative,
conditional,
specific to this here and this now,
and things are always shifting,
changing,
calling for something different
in the next here and now,
or the one after that.

Rules,
recipes
and roadmaps
are of no use on the Hero’s Journey.

A Guidebook that starts out,
“Listen to yourself all the way,
and when listening to yourself--
Your heart,
your body (symptoms and 'feelings'),
your dreams,
your intuition,
your instinct--
leads to a dead end,
keep listening to yourself
to get out of there
and back on the path,”
is the best guide there is.

Keep consulting it
to remind yourself
of the importance
of remembering
to listen to yourself.

St. Mary of the Angels 10/04/2008 Oil Paint Rendered — Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
We (ideally) bridge the worlds,
the physical world
of normal, apparent, reality,
and the metaphysical (Our term)
the world beyond the physical world,
which is the world of abnormal,
easy to overlook/deny, reality.

Our Ego-mind connects us firmly
to this world.
Our Yogi-mind connects us firmly
to the world beyond this world.

Yogi-mind can be thought of
as Buddha-mind,
or as the mind of Christ.
I prefer "Yogi-mind"
because that has the least
amount of baggage connected with it
for those in the West.

Jesus and John-the-Baptist,
the Prophets, Moses and Abraham,
were the Jewish equivalents
of the yogis of Hinduism and Buddhism,
and so, for me, "Yogi-mind"
connects all of those who were/are connected
with the Metaphysical world
beyond this world.

The place of Ego (Or, Ego-mind),
is to cooperate with Yogi-mind
in becoming the contact point
between worlds,
so that Ego-mind and Yogi-mind merge,
becoming the Buddha/Christ/Moses/etc.
within this world of trees and concrete,
and leading the way to life
between worlds,
which is where we all need to be.

We all are to be Christs, Buddhas, Ego/Yogis.

And, we want nothing to do with that.
We are eternally as Adam and Eve,
looking for a really good deal in this world.
And living between worlds has nothing to commend it.
("Can you do it and eat chocolate at the same time?")

So. Here we are. Now what?
Those of you who can,
come with me between the worlds.
Those of you who cannot,
enjoy your chocolate.

We bridge the worlds through
emptiness, stillness and silence,
integrity and sincerity,
living to exhibit/express/incarnate
our original nature
and the innate virtues we all have at birth,
in this world of noise, complexity and circumstances
beyond our control,
by doing what needs to be done
when it needs to be done,
where it needs to be done,
how it needs to be done,
(which we intuit and implement)
in each situation as it arises,
no matter what,
and moving on from there
into the next situation as it arises,
and so on
throughout our life.
Connecting the worlds
by being at-one with each world,
here/now.

Living like this is to be transparent to ourselves
transparent to one another
and transparent to transcendence,
awash in the wonder of it all
forever.

This is "the kingdom of God" on earth.
"Realized eschatology."
"The new heaven and the new earth."

Ego-mind and Yogi-mind = one mind.
In the grind of the same old same old,
nothing special,
everydayness of here/now.

"Enlightenment and then the laundry,"
is as wonderful
and as beautiful
and as transformative
as it gets.
That's it.

Wow!

Sailing By 11/01/2008 Oil Paint Rendered — Silver Lake, Pamlico Sound, Outer Banks, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Ocracoke Island, North Carolina
No highs, no lows.
"Hold her steady as she goes."

There are no steady states of being,
so we opt for the next best thing,
keeping the wobbles within
a normal distribution curve.

This is the meaning of,
"The hills and mountains
will be made low,
the valleys and the swamps
will be lifted up,"
and equality and individuality
will characterize life among all people
and justice will be done
throughout the earth.

Of course, this requires cooperation
and mutual commitment to the good of all,
and who is going to enforce that?
And who is going to pay off the enforcers
to look the other way?
And who is going to run the black markets
and the sex trade operations?
And who is going to keep them from being run?
And, like that, things are exactly the way they are.
Because people thirst for power over people
and want to rule the world.

What is the fascination with ruling the world?
With controlling the seas
and collecting the tariffs?
With being rich beyond reckoning?
With preferring to be obeyed
over having a life?

And then, there are people like me,
sitting quietly,
reading Chinese poetry,
wishing everybody would leave everybody alone.

Suffering, pain,
misery and agony
get all the hype.
"Oh, the pain, the pain!"
"Why the pain?"
"Oh, woe, oh, woe!"

We go on so over
the suffering and the pain,
that it is hard to tell
where the actual experience
of suffering and pain starts
and the anticipation/dread
of suffering and pain stops.

We agonize over unexperienced agony,
ourselves' and others.'

And can reduce our pain and suffering
immediately
just by treating them with
no more seriousness than they deserve.

This is called "Turning the light around."
Shining the spotlight of our attention
on something other than sorrow and misery--
grace and compassion, say--
shifts our entire world
from gloom and sadness
to kindness and generosity.

Turning the light around
is changing the focus of our attention
and transforming our perspective--
what we tell ourselves
about what we look at,
how we interpret what we see.

And that transforms everything.

Jesus said,
"Let your 'Yes' be yes,
and let your 'No' be no."

And he might have added,
"And, let your 'Goodbye' be goodbye,"
because there is no looking back
with regret or longing
for those whose "Yes" is yes,
and whose "No" is no.

People who live with authenticity
and genuineness,
who say what they mean
and mean what they say,
with no duplicity or pretension
about them,
are just as they are here/now,
and are gone when they leave.

Being here/now and gone
is the way to do it.

And the people who master
living in that fashion
are never gone,
but always here/now
in the lives of those who knew them,
like someone who has been resurrected
from the dead.

Their life is an exhibition of truth
that never dies,
and they are always present
in the presence of truth,
in an eternal here/now kind of way.

World without end.
Amen.

Moonrise at the Totem Group 02 Oil Paint Rendered –Monument Valley Tribal Park, Arizona
Silence is a lost art
and the primary source of realization.
Things occur to us out of the silence.
We can ponder the solution to a problem
for days
and take a shower
and there it is
with a clarity and certainty
that leave all questions answered.

Or we can wrestle with what to do
until we fall asleep,
and the right action
comes to us in a dream.

We can enhance our creativity
by being quiet more often,
for longer periods of time.
With no agenda.
No plans.
No schedule.
No time table for creativity to appear.
Just. Being. Still. And. Quiet.
With no end or outcome in mind,
and no possibility of "success"
or "failure."

Being silent for the joy of being silent
will turn the light around,
and enable us to see things
normally hidden from view.

Making that a new way of life
will produce unpredictable
enhancements to the life we are living,
with surprise and wonder
becoming regular companions.

Lake Crandal 02 11/19/2019 Oil Paint Rendered — Anne Springs Close Greenway, Fort Mill, South Carolina
If I could do one thing for you,
I would increase your pain threshold.

Our tolerance for the pain of life
is the single most important thing
about us.

Increasing that gives us more latitude,
flexibility,
working room
in dealing with the day's deliveries.

The way we take what comes
determines the response we make
to our life,
and sets the tone for our manner,
deportment,
posture,
attitude,
spirit,
resiliency,
pleasantness,
openness,
kindness,
dependability
and good humor
that exhibits who we are
to the world.

If we can handle the pain of life,
its disappointments,
heartbreaks,
and turns for the worse,
we can help other people
handle theirs,
and be in their lives,
and in the life of the world,
"the kind of help
that help is all about"
(Shel Silverstein).
And that will make all the difference.

If I could do two things for you
the second would be increasing
your level of mindful awareness
with which you walk through each day.

The two things are the same thing.

If you haven't watched all of the
Jon Kabat-Zinn YouTube videos
on Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction
(MBSR)--
the shortest ones first--
Why not?

Lake Brandt Morning 11/06/2008 Oil Paint Rendered –Bur-Mil Park, Greensboro, North Carolina
Marianne Moore said,
"The cure for loneliness is solitude."

Solitude is solidarity with ourselves.

Speak and listen inwardly for a response.
Ask a question and listen for a reply.
See how long you can extend the inner dialogue
imagining a conversation with yourself.

Our best ideas are generated within ourselves,
and we discover Jung was quite right with his,
"There is within each of us
another whom we do not know."
And it is time to make acquaintances.

Cutting off the TV and sitting quietly,
listening within,
opens up a new world.
Invites exploration of a side of us
we did not know we had.

Insight and intuition come to life
when we listen to what we have to say
and honor what we hear
with attentive respect,
and we discover a friend
we did not know we had,
expanding our world,
deepening our pool of inner resources
just by listening
to what we have to say.

Sunflower Garden 08/03/2022 Oil Paint Rendered — Nursery Photos, Lowes Garden Center, Indian Land, South Carolina
How often,
and at what point,
does your personal gain
factor into your choices and decisions?

That is where we step into
the story of Adam and Eve
in the Garden of Eden
and where we go from there,
what we do then,
tells the tale.

Where we go from there,
and what we do then
has been the subject
of every sermon I ever preached,
and of everything I have ever written.
I have a WordPress site that houses
everything I have ever written,
for your browsing convenience,
and you don't have to have a WordPress
membership to access it,
but you do have to be driven
by a hunger to know what's what
and already be searching for it everywhere.
You are looking for what clicks with you,
evoking something within you,
that recognizes "IT" when you see it.

We all live in the service of
inklings and nudges,
pushes and shoves,
that we do not control
or understand.

Our place is to place ourselves
in their service
and do what we are told
when, where and how--
without having to know why.

Savvy?

Jesus came "in the fullness of time."
We all do.
In all of us "the time is fulfilled."
In all of us "the kingdom of God is at hand."
Every moment is the moment of transfiguration.
The moment of realization/enlightenment/illumination/revelation...

This is the Eternal Now of our being/becoming
aware of and present to
the time that is at hand.

We are never more than one slight
perspective shift away
from knowing it is so,
the time of our own unveiling,
the time of our own "triumphant entry"
into the world of time and space--
seeing/hearing/understanding/knowing/
doing/being at one with the Tao,
with ourselves,
with all that is and is to be,
here/now
in a "the oak is in the acorn"
kind of way.

Then what?
Then we do what needs to be done,
when, where and how it needs to be done
in each situation as it arises,
no matter what
for as long as life shall last.

And then, we leap into the light,
and do it all again
in a different time and place,
in each situation as it arises,
as long as life shall last...

Do not forget the leaping into the light part.
That is the most important step
in the entire journey.
That's where it all begins.
Again.

Dry Falls 06/04/2006 Oil Paint Rendered — Nantahala National Forest, Highfalls, North Carolina
There is cooperating with the power
coursing through life and being,
and there is co-opting and coercing that power
(Or attempting to).

This is the theme of the Star Wars movies,
and is the difference between Yoda and Palpatine.
Using the Force for our own ends
(Or attempting to)
is the way of the Dark Side.

Doing our work and stepping back,
stepping aside,
getting out of the way of The Way,
and "letting nature take its course,"
is the Way of the Tao
as noted about 500 BCE
in The Lao Tzu
(Also called, "The Tao Te Ching").

This is the seminal truth
of the story of the Garden of Eden
running from Eden to Gethsemane and Golgotha,
and is the bane of humankind.

Each individual over the long span of humanity
chooses how to live in relation to the Tao,
and that is the choice that tells the tale--
of our individual life
and of the collective life of the species.

It is explored in the works of Carl Jung
and Joseph Campbell
and is the theme of our existence.

To cooperate or coerce?
We decide anew
in each situation as it arises,
or, more accurately, decide
in each of the first few situations,
and then automatically maintain the momentum
of the Dear and Glorious Tradition
throughout what remains of our life,
though the Light continues to shine
through the cracks
to enlighten/awaken/illumine
those who can see/hear/understand/know/do/be
even now,
even so,
even yet.

To cooperate or coerce?
The choice is always ours to make,
and choosing wisely is always the hope
of humankind.

The following is an excerpt from my book,
"A Handbook for the Spiritual Journey,"
on WordPress:

"Less than 45% of registered voters
turn out to vote in most elections.

50% of 45% is only 25% of the voters
registered to vote.

If you cannot scare 25%
of the registered voters
into voting for you,
you should be ashamed.

The money spent
by the status quo in campaigns
in local and national elections
has been spent to scare
its faithful (fascist) base
into turning out en masse to vote.

It only needs 25% of registered voters
to vote in most elections.

The lethargic 75%
give elections away
time and again."

Registering more voters
and working to get all voters
to realize the importance
of turning out and voting
in every election great and small
in local as well as national elections
is the work that sways the future.

And it must be done!

Kansas is evidence in support
of the importance of voting
in the service of a viable future
for all people.

Nothing has the power
of exercising our right to vote
by voting in every election
for the good of all the people.
