Atlantic Dawn 03 10/26/2008 Detail Oil Paint Rendered — Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Ocracoke Island, NC
What are the meaningful things in your life?

How many meaningful things do you do in a day?

In a week?

In a month?

Our joy of life varies in direct proportion
to the amount of meaning in our life.
No meaning, no joy.

You could look it up.

Or, you could experiment with your own life.
Watching how joy increases as meaning increases.

Doing things that are meaningful to us
is strictly up to us.
We are in charge of the meaning quotient in our life.
We cut back on the things that are not meaningful
and double up on the things that are.

What's the problem?

November Maples 11/06/2005 Oil Paint Rendered — Greensboro, North Carolina
We want that and don't want to give up this to get it.

"You can't have your cake and eat it, too,"
gets to the heart of the matter.
The only way out of the morass
is bearing the pain.

How well--how consciously--how deliberately--
how consistently--how utterly and completely--
we bear the pain of being alive
and living constantly between the two poles:
"I want to have my cake!"
"I want to eat my cake now!"
Tells the tale.

When Col. Nathan R. Jessup said
(In the movie, "A Few Good Men,")
"YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!"
he was talking about the truth,
"You can't have your cake and eat it, too!"

All of our problems come down
to wanting to have our cake and eat it, too.
Come down to
having to give up this to get that.

God Damn It!
We just want everything at the same time!

My sister Susan killed herself
by starving herself to death in Hospice care
because living meant living on life's terms,
and her terms were the only terms she would accept.

Doing it her way meant doing it this way now,
and that way in five minutes,
and that way five minutes later,
and no one could live with her
because her way was always changing
in light of whatever she wanted now,
no, now,
no, now...

Vladimir Putin wants everyone to adore him
on his terms.
Norma Jeane Mortenson killed herself
because what she wanted
interfered with something else she wanted,
and she couldn't bear the pain
of not having what she wanted
for the sake of something else she wanted.

The lesson in all of this is:
We have to bear the pain!
We have to bear the pain of the truth
we can't handle!

How well we live hinges on
how well we bear the pain
of our opposites,
of our contradictions,
of wanting this without giving up that.

Life becomes a lesson in pain management.

The people who live well,
bear their pain well.

The Sisyphean Task
is bearing the pain of being alive.
Of negotiating our way between
Scilla and Charybdis.
Between wanting this
and having to have that.

Sit down with what's killing you,
and come to terms
with the pain you are carrying.

What is the nature of your pain?
What is the source of your pain?
What is life requiring of you
that you do not want to relinquish?
What will handling the truth mean for you
and the way you are living your life?

This is a conversation that living well
requires of us
over the full course of our life.
We constantly bear the pain
of not being able
to have our cake
and eat it, too.

Broaden the conversation to include
your best friends.
Tell them about your cake
and ask them about theirs.
Make it a regular part of your relationship.
"How's it going with you and your cake?"

It is called consciously bearing
the pain of being alive.

The only way I know of handling the truth
is to handle it consciously
with those we trust to know us well.

Great Blue Heron 03 05/18/2011 Oil Paint Rendered — The Bog Garden, Greensboro, North Carolina
The key to photography
is taking a lot of pictures
and knowing what you like
and don't like about each one--
then working to duplicate/deepen/expand
what you like,
and stop doing what you don't like.

The mystery about photography
is learning to see what makes your little heart sing
and your little toes dance.

When you turn image selection
and composition over to your little heart
and your little toes,
the magic happens,
and you spend your time going "Wow! Wow! Wow!"

And, some of them become photographs.

Checkerboard Mesa 09/25/2008 Oil Paint Rendered — Zion National Park, Springdale, Utah

It is an inside job all the way.
We think it is about rearranging/
changing/transforming the world
and other people to suit ourselves,
when it is about adjusting ourselves
to adapt to, mesh with, our surroundings.

We align ourselves with,
live in accord with,
the natural flow--
the Tao--of time and place,
and allow things to become
what they need to be.

This is the time to empty ourselves
of our ideas/preferences/wants/desires
of/for how things ought to be,
and simply support the "beingness"
of things as they are coming to be.

What is the drift?
The direction?
The trend?
How do things seem to be leaning,
wanting to be, to become?

If the baby needs to be held and rocked,
hold and rock the baby.
If the dog needs to be comforted,
comfort the dog.
And let the next thing that needs to happen
arise of its own accord
out of the madness of the moment,
and assist that thing in its development.
Until a theme becomes visible,
a rhythm and routine take shape,
and order is coming into focus.

We help restore the balance and harmony,
and allow peace to evolve as it will,
without forcing anything to happen out of time.

Knowing what time it is for
and doing that
is telling time the way time
is meant to be understood.

Kisatchie Pines 08/13/2008 Oil Paint Rendered — Kisatchie Forest, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana
The way we see things
impacts everything.

You would think that we would
go to the trouble
of trying to see things
as they are.

But, when you consider
how far out of the way
we would have to be
in order to do that,
it begins to make sense
that we wouldn't go anywhere near
that kind of trouble
with much of anything we look at,
much less, everything.

To see things the way they are.
and to evaluate them properly,
in light of all things to be considered,
is completely out of the question.

We don't see ourselves that way.
The neighbor's dog barking
its fool head off
at 2:33 AM--
And the neighbor along with it--
don't stand a chance.

Rhododendron 06/26/2009 Oil Paint Rendered — Dugger’s Creek, Linville Falls Visitor Center, Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina
When "the world is too much with us
late and soon" (William Wordsworth),
we have to recognize it
and step back.

And when we cannot step back,
we have to recognize that,
and let it be,
because it is,
and live with as it is,
knowing
in a "This cannot be helped,
so let's do what we can"
kind of way.

Doing what we can
with a world that "is too much with us,"
is hero's work,
worthy of song and fable,
and the fact that no one notices
or cares
adds to the value of the work
done "Without hope,
without witness,
without reward"
(Steven Moffat, Dr. Who).

This is the legacy of all
who know what's what
and do what can be done about it.

It is the Sisyphean Task,
doing the tedious,
tiring,
boring work
that holds the world together
and must be done,
when and where and how it needs to be done.

And if the world is too much with us,
we still have the stone
waiting for us at the bottom of the hill,
to see what we are made of.

To show us what we are made of.

Penobsccot Bay Sunset 03 10/14/2009 B Oil Paint Rendered, Deer Isle, Maine
We live to find the still point,
the safe harbor,
of balance and harmony.

The catch is that there
are no steady states of life and being.
Now we have it,
now we don't.

Controlling the wobbles
will have to do.

Emptiness, stillness and silence
can help with that.
Reducing noise and complexity.
Diminishing vulnerability
by limiting exposure.

But, prisoners in solitary confinement
are very safe.
Freedom has its downsides,
responsibility being one of them.
How constraining responsibility is!

And so, the flow between extremes,
looking for just right
between too hot and too cold.
The movement of life and being.

Living takes a lot of getting used to.
And flexibility.
And good humor.
Listening, looking, being aware,
doing what needs to be done
in the service of balance and harmony,
and letting looking for the still point
become the still point
while being on the move.
Laughing.
Enjoying the dance.
And the thrill of not-knowing what's next
or what we will do about it.
Looking forward to finding out.
Hoping it never ends.
Weeping when it's done.
And getting back in line
to do it again.
Never tiring of the dance.

Little Pigeon River 04/14/2009 Oil Paint Rendered — Greenbriar District, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cosby, Tennessee
We don't have enough wonderful in our life.

We ought to make it our business
to increase the Wonderful Quotient in
each week.

It may be too much to ask of each day,
but adding wonderful to each week
ought to be a doable task.

We owe it to ourselves to make the effort.
Just embracing the intention
will increase the likelihood
of our paying attention to the things
we experience as wonderful,
and heighten the chances of our
being increasingly aware of wonderful
when it crosses our path.

Let's join together
in taking the oath:

"I will not miss wonderful in my life this week!"

The Mouth of the Bay 09/24/2008 Oil Paint Rendered — St. Margaret’s Bay, Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia
Enlightenment is not a matter
of thinking anything up,
but of realizing what just
occurred to us
and connecting that with how
we have always been told things are
by those who know
and are right about it.

Who cannot tell us anything
we don't know when we know
what we know.

Which is to say,
we cannot be talked into enlightenment,
we can only realize our way there,
which is to live our way there.

Which is to know what we know
and connect that with what
we have always known.

Like, "Money is useless
beyond paying the right kind of bills."

And, "All of the real answers
are found within."

And, "Truth is all twisted nonsense
until you know what's what."

And, "Sit still, be quiet,
until something occurs to you
that clicks things into place."

Summer At The Lake 07/18/2009 Oil Paint Rendered — Lake Brandt, Bur-Mil Park, Greensboro, North Carolina
Listen to your nighttime dreams.

All of our nighttime dreams are saying
"This is the way it is with you and your life
presently. What are you going to do about it?"

Dreams speak symbolically.
If you have lost your keys,
are in a car that you cannot stop or control,
are late for an exam you didn't study for,
have to give a speech on a topic you know nothing about,
etc.
It relates to your life current at the time of the dream.

Learn how to read the symbols.
If you can't find your pocketbook, your purse, your wallet,
could be you are doing things in your life
that aren't true to yourself.
You have lost your identity--your ID, get it?
And need to restore your integrity
in your actual life.

Find the connection between dream and life.
Where are you in your life
like you are in your dream?

Listen to your stomach.
Your bones.
Your body.
Your heart.
These are your somatic guides.
And are a very present help in time of trouble,
to everyone who goes to the trouble
of listening attentively
and living accordingly.

Our work is restoring the balance,
recovering the harmony.
Life is always throwing us off the beam,
off the path, off the way.

The beam, path and way require us to stay on
by maintaining our balance/harmony.
Remaining stable and centered on what is vital
to our life, spiritually,
while doing what it takes to be alive, physically.
Vital on two levels at once,
walking two paths at the same time.

It is a balancing act.
What are the forces of instability
in your life?
What keeps knocking you off the beam?

The emptiness, stillness and silence
are where we go to consider/contemplate/reflect on
these things,
restore our connections with our somatic guides,
and get back on the path.

It's all practice.
All of the time

Camden Harbor 01 10/02/2002 Oil Paint Rendered — Camden, Maine
Start anywhere,
any time.

The path begins with the next step,
in any direction.
Just start walking
with your eyes and ears open,
being aware of everything.

There is nothing more to enlightenment
than realization,
and there is always more to realize
than we realize,
so we are always being enlightened,
we are always waking up,
there is always more to know
than we know.

The Buddha died from eating bad pork!
Shoulda seen that coming, Bro!

There is always something else coming.
Don't be thinking you've seen it all,
or that you know it all.
Always be listening, looking,
being mindfully aware of everything.

It is the way.

Johnson Creek 04 11/13/2017 Oil Paint Rendered — Gay Fish Company, Saint Helena Island, South Carolina
Contriving to have our way
is the root of all of our problems today.
Any day.
Every day.

"I came not to be served,
but to serve,
and to give my life
to set others free."

Free to be what?
To do what?

To be who they need to be,
doing what needs to be done
in each situation as it arises
all their life long.

How free is that?

It is as free as we can be.
Free to serve the good of the whole.
Free to serve the good that is good.
In each situation as it arises,
throughout our life.

How good is the good we call good?
Whose good is served
by the good we call good?
We live for whose gain in mind?
Whose profit?
Whose advantage?

Who is better off for our having lived?
Who is worse off?
Who are we living for?
Who are we living to be?
What are we living to do?

What do we mean by the life we are living?
What are we saying by the life we are living?

Are we here to serve or to be served?
Whom/what do we live to serve?
