A Line of Cypress Trees — Reelfoot Lake State Park, Tiptonville, Tennessee
We know where we belong
and where we have no business being.
We know what is "us,"
and what is not "us."
We know what is so about "us,"
and what is not "us."

With no idea of how we know,
beyond knowing that no one told us
any of it.

Yet we read "self-help" books
by the gazillion,
hire "life coaches,"
join the congregations of gurus,
seek advice from an endless line of outlets
and spend our life seeking who we are.

While our intrinsic intuition
languishes for lack of attention,
yet, continues to offer its counsel
through dreams,
body signals,
hunches,
slips of tongue,
and experiences of serendipity
and synchronicity.

We will never know about
the ride we are missing
if we don't get on board.

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters, five granddaughters, one great granddaughter, and a great grandson on the way, within about ten minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.

  1. The “self help” books can only show ‘how to’ shuffle the furniture around, they do not really help (but mind is fooled into thinking that they do, hence the popularity) ! The only help possible for any ‘self’ is to know it’s ‘real Self’, which no book can teach.
“Know thyself” is the 1st relevant teaching, everything else falls in line from here.

  2. And we have had access to “know thyself,” and “to thine own self be true,” for how long? To be true to our “own self,” is to be staunchly against all that we want to be ours. And we have to choose whose side we are on. We typically pick the wrong side every time.
