Approaching Upper Falls 06-30-2011 — Yellowstone River, Yellowstone National Park, Canyon Village, Wyoming
Letting come what's coming
and letting go what's going
is living with an appropriate degree
of "working distance"
between ourselves and our life,
enabling us "to do what needs to be done,"
as in shooting Old Yeller when the time comes.

As in "Holding them close and letting them go"
when our children reach the age
of being their own selves,
going their own way
in the service of what they need to do
the way they need to do it.

All that we "have" is held tenuously,
temporarily,
and if "they/it" doesn't leave us,
we will leave "them/it."

It is the way.

Recognizing what's what,
and letting it be
because it is
is the foundational duty/obligation
laid on each of us at our birth.

And recognizing this as being so
is the essence of growing up,
being who we are,
and doing what needs to be done,
when/where/how it needs to be done--
and that is all that can be asked of us
at any stage of our life.

How are you coming with that?

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters, five granddaughters, one great granddaughter, and a great grandson on the way, within about ten minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.

  1. I wake up everyday amazed that I am still here. Today’s chores include voting on behalf of saving our democracy and PT plus pharmacy pickup to keep my life moving along. It’s a beautiful day in Asheville/Arden, NC. I am glad I woke up early enough to see the dawn of this day. I hope all is well with you.

    1. I am glad to be able to “take care of business,” some of which is more odious than other aspects of it–taking care of filing income tax is something I detest annually, but, so far, manage to get it done. And I would be much better off with accessible scenes to photograph year ’round. Taxes and Scenes are the two extremes, the poles of my life with everything else falling out between them, and I am happy to be able to do what needs to be done with all of it on a daily basis–may it be so as long as I am capable of rising to the occasion each day!
