Mesquite Dunes Oil Paint Rendered — Death Valley National Park, California
Being among the dunes
is one of the quietest places
in my experience.

The sun rises over silence and stillness,
yet the dunes are moving,
transforming themselves,
all the time.

Constant motion has never been so still.
So apparently lifeless.
A place where nothing ever happens here.

It is a wonder to behold,
and leads us to wonder
what else are we missing
when we look at it,
listen to it.

What do we walk by not-seeing,
not-hearing
all the time?

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters, five granddaughters, one great granddaughter, and a great grandson on the way, within about ten minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.

  1. Jim… this photo today, and yesterday’s photo remind me of how you have gone to the ends of the earth seeking and finding beauty. The wind moves the sand, let us be moved by the Spirit! Unseen and unknowable yet always making changes to the arrangement of our grains of sand… I love you, brother!
