Family Outing 06/24/2011 Oil Paint Rendered — 399 and Cubs, Grand Teton National Park, Jackson, Wyoming
Do you think bears
think of quitting?
Or, considering their chances
and thinking of folding up?

Checking out?
Because it's just too much?

Or pelicans?

Chipmunks?

Things aren't going their way?
Do you think they ever think
about things not going their way?

I think they just wake up
and go meet the day,
every day,
for no reason,
without ever thinking about reasons
for what they do.

They just do what needs to be done.
Every day.

Do you think it is harder to be us
than it is to be an elephant?

Do walruses ever cheer themselves up
by saying, "At least I'm not a human being!"?

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters and five granddaughters within about twenty minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.

  1. Thank YOU! For the encouragement! We can’t claim credit for what needs to be written, and are honored to be the dowsing rod of the muses–discovering the treasures they scatter to reward the seekers. It is a great way of marking the journey, and I am glad to be a prospector in search of the gold!
