Lake Andrew Jackson 09/21/2007 08-Detail Oil Paint Rendered — Andrew Jackson State Park, Lancaster County, South Carolina
Our conditions and circumstances
fluctuate according to the times,
which are always changing,
so we have to be fluid and flexible
in order to respond appropriately
to each occasion as it arises.

What is important changes with the times,
and we have to change with them
in order to maintain our balance and harmony,
upon "the heaving waves of the wine-dark sea,"
in a "Then we did it like that,
and now we do it like this," kind of way.

It is incumbent upon us to develop
our ability to flow with the movement of the moment,
and not insist that things meet our expectations
and desires.

We have no reason to think that things
should be different than they are.
What do we need to do to respond appropriately
to the situation that is developing as we watch?
Our role is to do what needs to be done,
and figure that out as we go along,
hoping for enough stability
to allow us to catch our breath.

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters and five granddaughters within about twenty minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.
