I worry about not having what it takes
to rise to the occasion
and meet what is coming
in each situation as it arises
as I get older
and less reliable
situation by situation.

And I laugh
and remind myself
of Thich Nhat Hanh's mantra,
"Darling, I am here for you,
and together we will do our best."

(Thich Nhat Hanh's YouTube video
interview with Oprah Winfrey
is not to be missed)

Getting older means fading out,
slipping,
having lapses,
being unable to walk as fast
and as far
as we did yesterday,
and taking that in stride,
letting it be because it is,
cutting ourselves slack,
making allowances,
and laughing with love
at our daily foibles.

Knowing that we will meet things
that we cannot manage,
but always with the response/reply,
"Darling, together we will do
the best we can."

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters and five granddaughters within about twenty minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.
