Goshen Creek 23 07/03/2014 Oil Paint Rendered — Blue Ridge Parkway, Boone, North Carolina
Nature is just what it is.
Everything in the natural world
is making out as best it can
without rules and laws and conventions.

Civilization pretends to be civil.
We can trust nature to be nature,
but we cannot trust civilization to be civil.
Including the churches,
the courts
and the justice system.

And who is going to fix that?
Change that?
Improve that?

We can live with integrity,
noble hearts,
kind spirits,
and seek out companions
who are living that way,
but transforming the world
is out of our hands.

Jesus and the Buddha
left their culture/society
as they found it.
You and I are going to do the same.

Work for improvement,
serve compassion and kindness,
and don't let the lack of
corporate responses and its refusal
to follow your lead
get you down.

We see things for what they are
and do what we can,
and let that be that.

It is the way--
has always been the way
and will always be the way.

It is what we have to work with
in doing what is ours to do.
And we aren't doing it for the results.
We are doing it because it needs to be done--
and will always need to be done.
Don't let that stop you,
or even slow you down.

West Prong, Little Pigeon River 06 11/05/2015 — Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Chimney Tops Picnic Area, Gatlinburg, Tennessee
There is nothing but circumstances and consequences
producing, developing, creating, generating
circumstances and consequences
as far as the eye can see,
or the mind imagine.

Over time, patterns form,
repeat,
stabilize,
appear to be permanent.

Nothing is permanent but the process.

Consciousness is imagination,
realization,
recognition,
seeing patterns,
making connections,
shaping experience,
being shaped by experience,
producing stories,
creating the world we live in,
using only circumstances and consequences
as guides.

We make it all up.
We live in a fictional universe.
Calling it rational.
Saying it makes sense.

Nothing makes sense.
It is a random collection
of circumstances and consequences,
and we make of it what we will.
And kill one another over disagreements
about what it is and what it means,
and we make it all up.

To stabilize our world
and order our life,
because we like balance and harmony.

Everything likes balance and harmony.

Homeostasis and equilibrium are the purpose
and goal of it all.
Quieting the noise.
Reducing the complexity.
Making peace.

Eden.
Nirvana.
Heaven.
The Farther Shore.
Paradise...

Circumstances producing consequences
creating circumstances and consequences,
as far as the eye can see.

Anything we can say about it
is our way of squaring ourselves up with it.
Making peace.

That being the case,
why take it seriously?

Why not relax into it?
Relish it?
Enjoy it?
Embrace it?
Lose ourselves in the wonder of it,
laughing with it,
dancing with it,
playing with it,
all the way?

Lower Falls 1999 Oil Paint Rendered — Canon Village, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Doing in the moment
what is called for
by the moment
is the heroic task
in every moment.

Living attuned to the now
and alert to what's what
and what's happening
and what needs to be done
in response
is exactly what is necessary
to turn things around
and have them begin to fall into place.

We spend too much of our time
passively waiting for something
good to happen,
when the times need us to be
alert to what is being asked of us
in the here/now
moment to moment.

Living in accord with the way
is being aware of the way
and alert to what is waiting
for us to be what is needed
as only we can be,
whether anyone notices or not.

West Prong 04/13/2009 Oil Paint Rendered — Little Pigeon River, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg, Tennessee
The right kind of protection
is all we need,
and we all need that.

The right kind of protection
restores us to ourselves,
and enables us to be who we are,
just as we are,
as one thus come,
like a baby from the womb.

Jesus was born in a manger
and died on a cross,
and he was true to himself all the way.

His confrontation with Peter
and his "No, Lord! This shall not happen to you!"
was grounded on, "Get thee behind me, Satan!"
And this occurred immediately,
at least in its presentation in the gospel,
following Peter's answer to Jesus' question,
"Who do you say that I am?"
with, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God!"
And Jesus' response to Peter,
"You are the Rock and I give you
the keys to the kingdom."
From that to "Get thee behind me Satan!"
in the space of one line of text.

And, from there, we immediately get,
"Whoever wants to save their life will lose it,
and whoever loses their life in service to me
(which has to be understood as being
in service to their own best interest,
their life that is who they are, just as they are
as ones thus come),
will find it.

Where does Jesus stop and we start?
When we live in service to Jesus,
we are living in service to ourselves,
as one thus come,
as we are straight from the womb.

Jesus of Nazareth is only good for
connecting us with ourselves.

He tells his disciples,
on his way to Jerusalem and death,
"I must decrease and you must increase."

Jesus' mission was to connect us
with ourselves as one thus come
and get out of the way.

And the church used Jesus
as a way to squeeze money from the poor
and the wealthy,
the weak and the powerful,
and here we are today.

As those whom the church tells us to be.

We have to throw all of that off,
and all theology, doctrine and dogma as well,
and return to the simple basics
of being who we are as those thus come.

Picking up the path from there
and "following Jesus"
by listening to ourselves
in the emptiness, stillness and silence,
and doing what needs to be done
as only we can do it
in each situation as it arises,
knowing what that is
as Peter knew who Jesus was,
and becoming who Jesus was ourselves,
by being who we are as one thus come.

Get it?
Do it!

Cataloochee Bridge 01 09/02/2014 — Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cataloochee District
We nurture, nourish, our connection
with the way
through routine returns to emptiness,
stillness,
and silence,
and with regular visits
to the natural world.

Nature is just so,
just as it is,
with no pretensions
or aspirations,
and a reach that does not
exceed its grasp.

Our nature is that way as well.

The Buddha was hailed
as "the one thus come."
The one who was who he was.

Jesus maintained that same
relationship with himself.
He claimed to be one with God,
who had said, "I am who I am,"
and Jesus referred to himself
as "the Son of Man,"
which is to say, "A regular human being,"
one with humanity and one with God,
and "one thus come."

The more we are who we are,
the more we are one with all living things.

Integrity and sincerity
run through the heart of life,
and connect us with life
and with those who are alive.

The return to nature
and the return to our natural self,
to our essential nature,
is the sine qua non of life at its best,
life just being what it is,
true to itself and all sentient beings.

"So close, and yet, so far away."

Because, we have plans, you know.
Agendas.
Ideas.
Big ideas.
About the Big Time.

Daffodils are quite fine
with being daffodils.
Just as they are.

Great Blue Heron 07 04/29/2013 Oil Paint Rendered — The Bog Garden, Greensboro, North Carolina
Circumstances create, produce, generate
their own outcomes, results, effects, consequences.
Which, themselves, create, produce, generate
new circumstances creating different outcomes, consequences...

It rains and a river forms
only where a river could form.
"Mamma, who made the beautiful river?"
"The rain, honey."
"Who made the rain?"
"Circumstances and possibilities."
"Who made the circumstances and possibilities?"
"There always have been circumstances and possibilities."

From there, nature takes its course,
and here we are.
Because of circumstances, possibilities
and consequences.

When we came into the picture,
in addition to creating circumstances
with possibilities and consequences,
we brought meaning and purpose into play,
with preferences and desires,
ideals and ideas,
war and bills of rights,
and nature found a corner to hide in
until the disturbance in the flow
disappears and things return to normal.

Fripp Inlet Sunset 01 12/05/2014 Oil Paint Rendered — Hunting Island, South Carolina
With deep appreciation and gratitude to Leonard Cohen for his work in finding the way and leading those who could be led to discover it for themselves!

Once there was a mysterious source--
it’s called “the way,” it has no force,
no way of making anything happen ever.
So it waits for all to fall into place
by watching for the propitious pace
and shouting out a resounding Hallelujah!

Hallelujah…

Circumstances are the origin of all that is
from the first to now there is only this:
freedom forming necessity with outcomes.
Light and dark are just what they love,
creating the other while shouting up above:
Hallelujah!

Hallelujah…

Responses and reactions coalesce
though space and time, without a rest,
sparking theories, making rhymes,
forming planets, churning sea brine,
black holes, white dwarfs, and all the rest,
Hallelujah!

Hallelujah…

The way way’s on through all of it,
spinning, ginning, producing
homeostasis and harmony
using contradiction, disparity and polarity
at will—which is no will,
but a special kind of waiting-knowing-
timing-pace,
Magic in the making in time and space, Hallelujah!

Hallelujah…

We come onto the scene,
in just the right way,
to see and sense and find the why,
balancing opposites,
aligned with the flow,
more port, more starboard
steady as she goes! Hallelujah!

Hallelujah…

The way moves through us,
guiding us/directing us/
calling us/attracting us,
leading us along the path
that is not a path--
with emptiness, stillness, silence,
essential nature,
innate virtues,
and the eternal secret etched on our bones:
the more we are us,
the more we are the way. Hallelujah!

Hallelujah…

Adams Mill Pond 42 11/10/2014 B&W Oil Paint Rendered — Goodale State Park, Camden, South Carolina
Everything hangs by a thread
and turns on a dime.
We can't take it more seriously
than it deserves.

Always the same questions,
in every circumstance/situation
as it arises:
Now what?
What next?

Always the same response:
Sit still,
be empty and quiet
listen,
look,
wait for realization,
awareness,
perception,
direction,
purpose
to occur,
then get up
and do what needs to be done--
and repeat as necessary
as balance and harmony return,
a pattern develops,
and a routine evolves
to suit the times.

"The times,
they are always a-changing."

And we have to be "a-changing"
along with them.

It is the way.

And has been the way forever.

Asking, "Here we are, now what?"
"Aqui estamos, a'hora que?"
Gets to be old hat after a while,
and we step into the next thing
like we belong there.

Harbor River 11/14/2014 Oil Paint Rendered — Sea Eagle Fish Market, St. Helena Island, South Carolina
What keeps us going
is the courage to take another step,
the resolve to see it through,
the curiosity to find out where
the path will take us
if walked with heart
and devotion to the task
of doing what needs to be done
because it needs to be done,
anyway, nevertheless, even so.

That is the spirit
that got us out of the caves
into the high rises
and walking on the moon.

Maybe feeding the hungry
will be next,
and educating the poorest among us,
and cleaning up the environment,
and, you know, like that.

None of which will happen
if we quit now.

That's what keeps us going.

We owe it to ourselves
and to those who come after us
to leave this place better
than it was when we found it.

Call it our covenant with life,
and live like we mean it--
with liberty and justice,
truth and equality,
for all.

Taggart Lake 02 Oil Paint Rendered — Grand Teton National Park, Jackson, Wyoming
Our highest order obligation
is to take care of our heart/soul,
by living from our heart/soul,
and honoring our heart/soul
in all that we do.

Being true to ourselves
is being true to our heart/soul.
Knowing ourselves
is knowing our heart/soul.

We are not taught this anywhere
along the way.

The church tells us to not trust ourselves
because we are sinful and evil to the core,
and we must trust the church
to tell us what to do, when and how.

We have to trust ourselves to not listen
to the church.

Or to society.

Or to commercial television.

...

Where do we take our cues for living?
Silence,
Stillness,
Emptiness,
Experience,
Reflection,
Realization,
Experimentation.

We all know when to quit pouring,
when we have eaten enough,
when it is time for water or wine,
what attracts us,
what repels us...

We come with essential knowing/recognition
intact.

When we trust our inner guide
we are trusting our heart/soul.
Being attentive to our heart/soul
is a matter of practice, practice, practice.

Awareness is a learned skill
as much as an inborn art.

We can live tuned-in to ourselves
and our environment,
and we can live clueless on all levels.

Heart/soul is a thing.
As real as the color of our eyes.
As true to us as our fingerprints.

We live to incarnate heart/soul,
to express/exhibit heart/soul,
to serve/tend heart/soul,
to be one with heart/soul--
in all times and places.

Dreams are a contact point with heart/soul.
Communing with heart/soul,
ruminating with heart/soul,
listening to heart/soul,
reflecting on heart/soul
leads to new realizations
and new ways of living
all because we take heart/soul seriously
and pay attention.

Dockside 14 11/14/2017 Oil Paint Rendered — Harbor River, Port Royal, South Carolina,
What are you famous for?
Not, "What do you want to be famous for?"
Not, "What do you wish you were famous for?"
What are you famous for?

What do people look for from you?
What do they look to you for?
What are you known for?
What is your shtick?

What do you like best about you?
Rank the highest?
Rate at the top of the list?

What do you look forward to doing the most?
Enjoy having done the most?
Are proudest to be associated with?

Two things stand out for me about me:

1) I get to the point.
2) I sit still and quiet,
embracing the silence,
enjoying the stillness,
relishing the emptiness,
present with nothing,
waiting to see/hear/know,
so that I may rise to do,
and continue becoming,
unfolding,
emerging,
developing,
realizing...

Oh, and there is one more,
3) I enjoy a good cup of coffee.
Alone, of course,
in the silence.

Adams Mill Pond 50 B&W 11/10/2014 Oil Paint Rendered — Goodale State Park, Camden, South Carolina
Everybody wants to be safe and secure
at everybody else's expense.

Vulnerability is the bane of the species.

We are vulnerable and cannot bear the idea.

The Old Testament has a line,
"We run from a bear,
and slam the door shut behind us,
thinking we are safe at last,
and a spider bites us."

We think, "Now we have it made,"
and a heart attack nails us.

Making our peace with the way things are
is our first order of business,
in a "This is the way things are,
and this is what we can do about it,
and that is the way things are,"
kind of way.

The clearer we can be about what we fear
is a good first step toward
dealing with our fear.

The second step is to sit quietly
and consider the resources that reside within.
Our essential nature
and our innate virtues.

We have to be clear about what we are good for,
about who we are really
in the way of our nature and character.

Clarity is peace.
Is balance.
Is harmony.

A lack of clarity is fear,
terror,
anxiety,
angst.

We have what it takes!
We have to know that,
believe that,
trust that.

We have made it this far!
We have what it takes.

Finding our way past the Clashing Rocks
and the Crashing Waves of the Wine Dark Sea
is our specialty!

We are made for this kind of thing!
We are built of rugged stuff!
We came straight out of the Serengeti!
Out of the caves and the steppes!
We have dealt with Arctic cold
And Sahara heat!

There is nothing we have not done!
We come from good stock!
We. Have. What. It. Takes!

Be clear about what is robbing you
of your peace.
Be clear about what you have access to
in countering the destabilizing fear.

And pick yourself up,
and go about your business,
with the confidence of the species
as your heritage and your companion.

You will not be bereft or abandoned.
Your genes have seen it all before.
Trust yourself to your genes
and step boldly into your life,
day after day.
You will be amazed.
