Pioneer Farm — Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Democracy has officially ended in the not-so-united-states. And I don’ t see how we are going to get it back. ICE agents are authorized to kill anyone who tries to put things back in place. The Justice Department has disappeared. Congress is no more than a formality and may as well disappear along with the Supreme Court. For what? We became a police state “like that” (Snaps fingers) because why? Trump wants to be supreme. But he is going to die like everyone else and then what? Who will replace Trump? It will be a shoot-out no doubt, and we will never live to see the world we used to live in. “Make America Great Again”? Not! Talk about a sales pitch for the ages. It’s nothing more than total immersion in absurdity fueled by greed and hatred, leaving us with where do we go from here? Finding our own center and being clear about what we need to do in response to what happens next will be our work for the foreseeable future as we find our way as best we can through the Curse of Donald Trump.

I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters, five granddaughters, one great granddaughter, and a great grandson on the way, within about ten minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.

  1. This is the plan all along. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, when you realize that you’ve been asleep at the wheel,that sound that woke you up is you driving off a cliff. Hard to come back from that. We are on the edge. Peace

    1. High Five! We did something similar to Native Americans with the Westward Ho push and the Gold Rush, and now with MAGA we are doing it to ourselves. At the end of his life, Lao Tzu became disenchanted, fed up and disgusted, and rode his water buffalo into “the west,” which was the term the Chinese people of his day used for “going off to die.” Leaving his master work, the Tao Te Ching, with the border guard as a memento. Civilization has given us Donald Trump and his minions as the best we have to offer. An apt metaphor for “driving off a cliff” as we entertain ourselves with comedic one-liners on the way down. My personal goal is to live at least 20 more years as a witness to the demise watching the dust settle. That will make me 101. Surely, by then I will have said all I have to say. Leaving only “Good-by and good luck” to my descendants and friends.

      1. I don’t want to get into a dystopian free-for-all, but no doubt you have noticed that things are a little dicey beyond the borders of the USA!! Lots of people massing to express themselves. I hope our collective intentions are good and productive at the same time. Peace
