Appalachian Sunrise — Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina
We help each other the most,
I think,
just by keeping one another going.

An encouraging presence.
Listening to the other's stories.
Sharing a meal.
Helping to bear a burden.
A kind word.
A soft, safe, place to be...

Carry on, carry on,
we can do this.

Being what the situation calls for,
reliably,
dependably,
over time.

Not much to it.
Anybody can do it.
Helping Sisyphus with his work
rolling that ball
up this hill,
then down on the other side.

Woops! Lookit! There's another hill!
Who would'a thought it.
Let's do it again!

Helping and being helped,
one hill--
one sunrise--
at a time.

We can do this!
Let's go!

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters, five granddaughters, one great granddaughter, and a great grandson on the way, within about ten minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.
