Ask any Native American you know,
and they will tell you straight-out
that you don't need any theology
whatsoever.

Ask all of the Taoists you know,
and they will tell you the same thing.

Ask all of the Buddhists you know--
particularly if they are Zen Buddhists
(In that Zen Buddhists
are actually Taoists and not Buddhists at all)--
and they will tell you the same thing.

No theology.
No dogma.
No doctrines.
No creeds.
No heaven.
No hell...

All you need is to know and to do
what needs to be done,
when, where, and how it needs to be done,
in each situation as it arises
throughout the time left for living.

Babies straight from the womb
can do as much.

All it takes is living as though
we are straight from the womb.

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters, five granddaughters, one great granddaughter, and a great grandson on the way, within about ten minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.

  1. Truth is simple. It cannot be complicated. Our minds and all our complex conditioning and habits turn it into something convoluted and difficult. When we open ourselves to the natural flow of life and follow it with some minimal awareness, it may be easy and straightforward to live in harmony and alignment with that pure simple Truth, without any theology or dogma involved.

We ignore the detailed instructions of every ‘ism’, but only look at the pure ‘knowing’ which is at the root of all spiritual/religious teachings. In their purity, the essential teachings of most religions, Tao/Zen/Sufi/Buddha/Christ/Vedanta etc. can all be distilled to one essence, of their Truth. That is before our human minds add to it, trying to embellish and complicate it, with our own personal limited cultural/social context and conditioning.

The truth in its simplicity is always available at every moment, wherever, however we are!

      1. Sadly, being human- all our interactions and activities are affected by our specific shortcomings and flaws of character. Religions generally are a highly affected area bearing the intrusion of all our human frailties, because they often involve beliefs, faith, emotion and trust of people- and all these are easily manipulated by those who desire to control and gain from their blindly trusting, vulnerable, fellow beings.
Individual morality, ethics and accountability will forever be out of control in our society, and as a result, religions in group form will never be free of corruption, just as the political and other aspects of our society.
Only hope is at the level of personal spirituality/ religion, not at the level of a population- as long as it remains a personal private affair and does not involve a whole segment of population- religion/ spirituality can remain honest, meaningful and rewarding.

  2. Individuals acting/living on their own in light of what they know to be so are the hope of the world. Organized anything is corrupt or soon-to-be-corrupt. It is the nature of organizations to perpetuate themselves and their agenda at all costs, which means “at everyone else’s expense.”
